What do you do when a big holiday falls on a weekend? Make it a three-day weekend anyway! Most business offices are closed today (interesting to see the office building parking lot near the Chuy’s completely vacant on a Friday), but myLot is open! (So’s Chuy’s. ) Here’s My favorite rock song without a mention of the title in the song’s lyrics. #1: The Last Resort - Eagles If the Eagles had only recorded one song in their entire history — this one — they’d still be one of my all-time favorite bands and worthy of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Man, what a song! I remember an interview with front men Don Henley and Glenn Frey when The Long Run was released and the topic turned to this song from the band’s previous mega-album Hotel California. “I ran into (singer/songwriter, Dylan associate, and co-writer of Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz”) Bob Neuwirth somewhere,” Frey said, “and just out of the blue he said, ‘Hey, thanks for “The Last Resort”.’” It’s an epic, the tale of a woman who leaves Rhode Island for the glamour of Los Angeles and disappears into the sleazy culture “where the pretty people played, hungry for power.” From there, the topic of environmentalism takes over (“there is no more ‘new frontier,’ we have got to make it here”). There interesting thing about this song is that it does not feature those country-rock harmonies that the Eagles were famous for. I’ve heard a lot of people refer to this as “Don Henley’s first solo song.” There’s not another Eagles song that comes close to this one in terms of magnitude and power. Yeah, Eagles, thanks for “The Last Resort.” Thanks for reading. The Last Resort Written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey Recorded by the Eagles From Hotel California, 1976 She packed her hopes and dreams:

Everything is usually locked up in my town on the long weekend. Love the Eagles, but don't have time to listen right now.
