Happy Fourth of July to everyone who celebrates! We are having barbecue for lunch and dinner today. My brother cooked a shoulder yesterday and today he will chop it up. I love his barbecue! Are you having anything special today?
For some reason, the Fourth of July always makes me think of my parents and the many times we celebrated together. I especially remember when I was in my thirties as that was some of the last years we were together as a family. My Mom died when I was 40.
My father would get up early and fire up his smoker. He would smoke the shoulder all day long over a low heat. He always made sure the outside of the shoulder was dark and crunchy because that was my favorite part.
While the shoulder was cooking, all of us kids and grandkids would play badminton, horseshoes and several other outdoor games. My Mom would sit in her covered swing and watch us, laughing. We had so much fun. It's one of my favorite holidays, besides Christmas.
It makes me sad because those are some of the best memories I have of our family. I guess I'm being sentimental. Now, our family is all over and we each celebrate separately. None of us live close enough to get together.

Happy 4th of July to you too, SIL is probably cooking something on the grill if he has time since he has to fix daughter's car and that might take some time. He can't do much during the week cause he works late and is tired when he gets home, so sat and sun are the days he can do something. Have a good one

It is good to be sentimental sometimes. But life is all about moving ahead.

@simone10 yes... even I'm one but these days I'm glad that I'm getting better gradually. This world isn't for sentimental people

It sounds like you have had some wonderful fourth of Julys. I had them when I was young too. Back then I didn't live where there was high fire danger, so we could set off those person fireworks on the pavement. I haven't lived where fireworks were legal in a long time. But at this age, I don't care all that much. And the sound scares the poor animals. I used to go to the community displays put on over bodies of water, to look at the big spectacular ones. those are fun. I may want to find some on TV tonight.
My son and daughter in law are having me over for barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs today. We have to remain distanced, of course. I'll take my mask and hand sanitizer and play it by ear, but we are very careful. I'm a hugger. Sure do miss being able to hug my son, maybe in a couple years lol.
Have a good holiday!

Happy 4th of July to you and your brother! I hope that shoulder tastes as good as I think it will.
I thought about making a pork tenderloin yesterday, but decided to hold off. Because of the rains today, I may just grill some burgers and dogs. Keep it simple.

@simone10 We did, we had a wonderful holiday! I always enjoy quiet time when we all get to hang out and enjoy each other's company. No rush to get places, or feel under pressure to have to do things, just sit at home and enjoy the relaxation! I hope your's was nice as well.

@DocAndersen It can be. Most of the time I'm okay thinking about her. But when I sit and really think and those old memories pop up, I do get emotional.

@simone10 there are days that are worse and days that are better, sometimes losing a parent is something really hard to shake.
