Dumber Than The Police Permit (2)

I consider myself a practical person. I don't renovate our flat or build garden sheds but I assemble IKEA furniture on my own. I usually have a good idea if something has to be done. Yet the other day I lost it. We've got a calamondin bush (aka golden lime, Philippine lime, Panama orange, Chinese orange or acid orange). It’s an indoor plant in our part of the world. We've had it for many years. It has always given us much pleasure. Small white, wonderfully smelling blossoms, small green fruit and ripe orange fruit used to be there at the same time. Recently, though, there haven't been any blossoms or new fruit any more. Some of the leaves have become round and crumpled and, above all, are sticky to the touch. Research on the net has revealed that the calamondin has caught spider mites. From further research I've learnt that soft soap helps to eliminate them. One can also buy hard chemical spray stuff, but why should one? The soft soap must be mixed with water and the liquid must be applied to the surface and the underside of the leaves with a sponge. While I was doing it, I was thinking how irregularly the bush had grown. Some twigs were so long that I couldn't reach the leaves near the stem. I thought to myself that it would be a good idea to cut off the ends and give the whole bush a proper shape again. The cleaning of the leaves took me over an hour. When I had finished or rather cleaned all the leaves I could reach, I stepped back and looked at the bush. Really, it needed pruning. I got a pair of scissors and became active. When I had finished, I suddenly realised that I had cut off most of the leaves I'd just cleaned so diligently. Wouldn't it have been wiser to prune the bush before cleaning the leaves? In this way I'd also have been able to clean the ones near the stem right away. I was gobsmacked and dumbfounded. Me! So stupid! In fact stupider than the police permit which is a well-known German saying. Have you ever done anything so stupid that you can't believe it afterwards? ------ You can find the other instalment when you click on the green bar at the top of the site. ----- Photo from the net.

Not that I can think of offhand, but I'm sure I have. It is a beautiful bush.

Laughing out loud, thanks so much! I couldn't even begin to speak of the stupid I have done. Like cleaning a grungy, nasty dog kennel (the kind you tote) only to realize I had just gotten a new one to replace the one I was cleaning because it wasn't fit to keep and headed to the dump. LOL

It happens to start to do something and change idea of what to do while the work is still in progress. At least you surely saved your calamondin.

@MALUSE I had green warms eating the leaves of my tomatoes and I also had to spray with soapy water. I see no more now.

I have indeed and still doing it I also use the soapy water to clean the leaves of plants and also spray them. I don't like those harsh chemicals you get at the stores. I hope your calamondin bush has survived.

Many times. And I actually anticipated (because I am brilliant) you frustration as I was reading your post. but you are an advocate of not being time-obsessed. Can you now do the same thing to the leaves that remain, and see if they thrive?

Spider mites are really difficult to get rid of. Would have been wiser to prune first.

Would you mind if I ask how the saying dumber than a police permit came to be? When I was a college freshman, I used to take the jeepney for a 45-minute ride to school. These things work like buses but with smaller capacity. Once I forgot my ID before boarding one, so I hurried home and looked for it but in my haste, I forgot to bring my phone with me on my way back to school. I have more, like when I lent my calculator to my sister and forgot to take it back for a test the next day. It was statistics and I had to do two back-to-back yellow papers' worth of equations just to make a small 0.001 difference away from the right answer. It was a single question test so I got the equivalent of 0 out of 100.

Every language has proverbs and sayings. Most of them are very old and their origin can't be found anymore. My interpretation is that it is a case of Schadenfreude (this German word has entered the English language. It's translated as 'malicious delight'). The police has power and people are glad if they make mistakes.

@MALUSE Oh, I'd understand that feeling when I would get past through school guards without my ID. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this!

It happened to me too with my plants. Sometimes, our brain doesn´t function well I have Calamondin, too and only a few fruits have left. I used them for marinating the meat.

That's a beautiful bush. I'm sure I have done more than my share of stupid things in my lifetime. Can't think of any at the moment. Good discussion. I hope your efforts are rewarded with a healthy plant.

Oh my, yes it would have been better to prune than treat, but regardless, it is taken care of.

OH dear I was very impressed until I read about the pruning. Sorry I have to say I laughed out loud! I would have been really cross with myself for doing that! Oh well we live and learn!
