Mixied up a marinade

I have chicken thawed for my dinner tonight. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it but ultimately I decided to marinate it and then roast it. I decided to go with a buttermilk one. I combined buttermilk, salt, ground black pepper, sugar, garlic powder, and paprika. I know that is a typical combination for fried chicken so I decided to go with it. We'll see how it turns out.

the recipes I've seen in the past for buttermilk marinades always included a bit of sugar. Not sure why.
