Would you tip 50%?

I just read a post on a food/restaurant blog stating that diners should tip at least 50% on meals--take out, dine-outside, or delivery. It states that workers have been deemed "essential" and therefore are working and putting their health at risk. It also says that they are dealing with fewer diners and, as a result, are earning far less than they normally would. It concludes by saying that tipping 50% is the least that people can do during these times. The author even suggests tipping up to 75 or 100% and states that, if you can afford to go out or order these days, then you can afford to tip generously to support the employees. The comments on the post are generally negative and disagreeing with the whole premise. A few people said that they are hurting financially too and a weekly or monthly take-out order is their treat these days. Others said that it is up to the restaurants to pay their employees more. I generally tip very generously and I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination. I tipped $20 on a $20 bill the day before NJ shut down because I knew that the server was going to be out of a job for awhile. I haven't been to any in-person restaurants since they re-opened for outdoor dining but I would definitely tip at least 50% these days. Delivery service like DoorDash or ChowNow--I don't think I would tip that much. I've been sticking with the customary 20%. I probably should increase that percentage. What do you think? Would you tip 50%?

Servers seem to forget that a tip isn't a mandated obligation, but gratitude (hence the term gratuity) for good service. If I get crappy service, they aren't getting one percent, let alone fifty.

@NJChicaa -- you know what's sad? My second-ever job was a waitress (car hop at a Frisch's), and I made $2.13 an hour. That was in 1978. Something should change in 42 years, y'know??????

I always tip 20% at the minimum. NJ servers are only paid $2.13 per hour by employers b/c the expectation is that they will more per hour in tips.

I would tip 50% if I could and the service is really good. The reality is, I seldom dine out.

It's a generous idea. I tip 20% for delivery. I'm not going out at all. I like the idea of tipping way more, but I really can't.

My hubs is the tipper in our family, and has always tipped generously. He's also tipped the entire cost of a meal several times due to unbelievable service. We don't eat out or order since the virus hit, but if we did, we'd leave much larger than normal tips. I do that on Instacart and send my cleaning lady checks even though I won't let her in my house to clean. If one can afford it, why not? These people are hurting!

I don't know. Not eating out or ordering take out so from me they are getting 0 tips. Would 20% be better than 0 if I did start to order occasionally?

I am all for tipping but that is a little steep in my opinion.

I tend to think that it should be up to the employer to give their employees more money. I do think we should tip more, but I'm not quite sure that I'd tip 50% more. Like the article says, some people use these delivery services as a treat. However, there are plenty that use it because they are too afraid to go out, or unable to go out for health reasons. Those people aren't necessarily able to tip extra.

Tipping more is fine; but on the rare occasion that we eat out (once in 4 months due to COVID-19), I think 50% is a little much. The wait staff should be making more than $2.13 per hour. Also, the service needs to be good. The waiter we had a couple of weeks ago was very lackluster. He certainly was not working for his tip.

I will tip if I have a very good mood.
