If We Had Only Known

I would have skipped tennis with hubby this morning if I had only known. As it turned out, we took a very short ride to our son’s house to drop off some of my yummy beets that I made yesterday.
Our son invited us to walk in his neighborhood instead of his usual walks here. He even showed us his two Doodles the cat’s pumpkin patches.
The nice walk started well, passing familiar homes of the houses my son’s friends grew up in, homes of our friends who also live in Florida, and the home of a doctor friend of ours.
A few times our son asked us if were okay walking in the hot sun. After 1 1/2 hours of walking, we wound up in the nature trails that lead through the Land Trust to our house. We hung out by the pond and streams and a dried up little waterfall that I had never been to.
Then we finally trekked another 1 1/2 hours uphill in the sun back to his house. Hubs and I had to stop and rest every time we came across the shade of a tree.
Our son offered us water and a dip in his pool when we returned to his house, but we declined and threw ourselves into our air conditioned car and drove the couple of minutes home.
If we had known about this walk, we would have skipped tennis and rested up in bed much longer or walked on our shady street. We are getting too old for this.

What a work out morning for you guys - lots of walking under the sun! Still you did better than my kids . . . sometimes after not even a half hour of walking, they will say let's get back home and I will say let's keep going . I am noticing that I am not as agile anymore when hiking . . . I go cautiously slower and seem to be more afraid of heights when I wasn't that way before. I never asked for this old stuff!

Your story sounds a lot like a walk I had with Claudia last December. She invited me to the beach with the kids for 5 days. One day she left the kids with Carolina and invited me for a "small walk". We walked and walked and walked. Soon I saw that there was no way of going back. I would have to walk around a small lagoon. I told her that that would be my last walk with her. She replied that I had done it very well.

@DianneN Nope, no jogging here. If you see me running you better join me as something bad is coming.

When I saw the water, I immediately thought of you walking along the river with Grace.
Now that I'm showered for the second time today, I feel fine. I'm looking forward to dinner, because I'm as hungry as a bear and can't wait for those beets!!!

@thelme55 Thank, Thelma. I do hope you see Grace soon. Isn't she on vacation?
Dinner was good and so were the beets, but I was too excited to enjoy them as I should have. Our son called with exciting news, and when I'm excited, I can't enjoy eating.

When our kids take a walk, it's effortless for them. But, when I go along with them, my legs start giving out. I'll soon be 69 years old, my age is creeping up on me!

@kobesbuddy Yesterday wasn't humid, but it it today. I did my normal walk today for 5 miles and was soaking wet. A nice shower and cup of coffee made me feel great, and umm, so did the a/c.

I love to walk, but every time I get over my fear of dogs, a loose dog appears in the neighborhood. Never fails. Last time, the loose dog was a pit bull.

@DianneN i suspect that is always the case. As our kids get older they need less mom and dad

Sorry for the ordeal of walking under the hot sun for 2 1/2 hours.
The beautiful photo of a creek, is it yours?

you're not too old, come on, it's just that it was too hot and that made you tired more than it would if the temperature was lower

The heat is intense, my body doesn't do well with it either. Never has actually, even as a kid I would faint from the heat.

@DianneN Thank you. Her dementia happened very quickly, she's had it for a couple years. We only saw her a few times since she's had it. =(

@DianneN i imagine somebody lost in the wilderness, finds this brook, and leans forward to drink fresh water from the running water. then he sees some fish and he catches one for his food.
haha! my imaginative mind.
