First Fruits of Our Bottle Gourd Vine

I bought the seeds from the local market and planted them about five months ago. I invested some labour on making a support with wire on which the vine could spread. I occasionally watered the shoots during the dry season. The vine has spread beyond the support and climbed on a nearby muringa tree and even on the wall fence of the children's home. Here, some children are holding the first bottle gourd fruits from the vine. These fruits look more like jars, so I'd prefer to call them jar gourds. The older boy in the image helps us in the garden. Three of these fruits will be gifted to three families in the campus. Gourds make excellent curry and they contain health benefits as well. Some people even prepare a health drink with them.

They are reminiscent of pears, only larger. They certainly look like they'd make a fine edition to fruit salad. Looking at them in the picture makes my mouth water.

We can't think of making them fruit salad. Perhaps because our taste buds are spoiled with too much spices.
