She passed away

We used to have a student in our structured class who has moved on to middle school. One thing we tried to get her mom to figure out was what the student A---- would do when she turned 18.
Mom said "oh, she will always live with me."
Mom had lots of serious health problems--heart, breathing, mobility.
She passed away Wednesday night. I do not know all the details.
I messaged Sue (former teacher and supervisor) on text, as she did not know. I also was doing FB messenger with the person who had told me as well as FB messenger with someone who might have more details about what A---- will do in the future.
I guess a family friend had been living with them and would like to have A---- live with her. A-----does not have any contact with her abusive dad. She does have an aunt and grandparents. A------ says she would like to live with the friend.
It is important we make plans for our dependent children. Especially in the age of Corona, as well as any other time. No the mom did not pass from corona, but her ongoing health problems caught up to her. That leave A----- with no firm legal plan.

It will be hard, as she is mentally handicapped and understands things about like a six year old.

When you have worked with these vulnerable, mentally handicapped persons you always want to know that they do well when they move on.

@GardenGerty I would feel the same way. I'm sure they have a way of getting into your heart.

Appropriate agencies will be involved in making sure that is the best placement for her. Her mom's parents have been very involved in her life, but they are too old to have the entire responsibility.

And your children were not mentally handicapped. This child has the mind of about six years old, IQ of 57, autistic with a late diagnosis, and anxiety as well.

@GardenGerty Why do you say that? I taught many who were severely handicapped with multiple disabilities.
It is still necessary to leave plans for every and any child.

I knew the student much better than I knew the mom.

ON her good days, she is happy. She likely will not completely understand. She is in community mental health support and has been for years.

Those are always terrible stories. The children don“t have a decent place where they will be treated right. And they are not juveniles either.

That poor family, thankfully you and the staff at the school seem to have her best interests in mind.
My husband and I review our will, especially the physical power of attorney section of it every couple of years because I feel that our views on life saving measures can change. We just had our will basically rewritten in December, and we did not even suspect the corona virus affecting our lives at that time as they are.

It is good to be on top of things. It is actually the mental health facility that provides her with counseling services and therapies for her. She actually falls under the jurisdiction of Department of Children and Families, a state agency, and they will investigate before they place her.

I am sure she is with Carolyn at this time Carolyn even helped them go on a trip to see family in Tennessee one time and she knows the child very well. She is also in community mental health programs, as she is mentally about the age of a six year old. Very little concept of the real world.

@GardenGerty The age does not matter because we do not know when our day will be.

The person who said this is her caseworker from the local community mental health provider.

We had a similar situation in Tawas. Lyndsey is mentally unstable and unable to do anything, unassisted. He lived with his parents for 30 years, then his mother passed away. Ken(father)isn't able to pick his son up, his back goes out. So, Lyndsey was placed in a special home, where he gets excellent care. Some say Ken was wrong, for doing this. When Ken passes away, who would give Lyndsey proper care? Ken took measures, so this won't happen to his son.

I have worked in programs with adult care homes and they can be very good, providing social connections as well as basic needs. I think Ken is smart. I am assuming he still spends time regularly with Lyndsey.

@GardenGerty Yes, Ken visits Lyndsey regularly to keep a close eye on how he's doing. He's eighty years old, this was a wise choice he made. What if Ken had to be hospitalized?

It's so sad when parents can't see that they won't live forever which means their child will become a burden to someone else.

You are so right. I hope the abusive dad in this case has lost all parental rights.

OH dear how terribly sad. How old is she now? I hope that her friends are rallying around her to give her the support she needs right now!

She has the mental ability of about a six year old, but she is either fourteen or fifteen. She has mental health worker that has been helping look after her needs, etc. for a long time, and the state, plus the community mental health agency will try to do what is best for her.
