Drop bears, bunyips, dahuts and practical jokes

MyLot member, topffer (@topffer ) recently wrote about carcolhs. You can catch up here:
In chatting with me, topffer also mentioned ‘dahuts’ which are, in topffer’s words, ‘a kind of mountain deer with the right legs shorter than the left legs, a darwinian example of adaptation of deers living on sloping grounds’. These imaginary animals sound like Australia’s drop-bears and bunyips, both of which are used to inspire awe and/or fear in tourists.
It brought to mind stories my husband tells about his early days working in a bank. It was common for new employees to be sent to the rival bank down the road to borrow a set of scales with which to balance the books. Invariably, the junior would return with the scales, saying he’d been told that, because the scales weren’t weighing true, a paper clip needed to be added to the debit side. Another trick was to ask the junior to borrow some verbal agreement forms.
I guess it was/is almost a ‘rite of passage’ for various tricks to be played on new employees. I’m not really fond of practical jokes. I always find myself feeling really sorry for the victim. It’s hard enough starting in a new position without being made fun of. Some, of course, are harmless; others not so much.
Photo is Vince's of some paper clips.
Edited: First paragraph added. Sorry, folks.
Hi all ! I spent June and part of July with the finest society in Paris, among the smartest people of the 1810's-1820's : Fontanes, Joubert, Chateaubriand... I...

In my working days which had to do with marine insurance they younger agents would get messages to call other agencies and ask for agents with names of animals that did not of course exist. There were no such agents and occasionally an agent found themselves asking for Mr. Lions only to find the number connected them to the Bronx Zoo lol

That kind of initiation of new employees is amusing but it leaves a neat lesson for everyone.

Years ago I worked in a window factory. New employees were sent to the parts warehouse for boxes of Number 2 dull razor blades and invisible paint. (Thankfully, when someone tried to send me for those things I thought about it and started laughing. Nobody tried sending me for anything silly again.)
Edit to add: I knew about drop bears but had never heard of bunyips before. So I looked them up. Here is an artists rendering of a bunyip.1 person likes this

I've heard of that, too...
The funniest thing I think I've heard of was paint that mimicked wood grain. And then I found out this was actually a "thing". (One of the doors at our last house had this painting technique applied to it. We were told the previous tenant, my aunt, had considered doing all the doors this way but changed her mind after finding the technique too time consuming.) I actually thought the door was solid wood until our landlord explained about it.

@DaddyEvil We had a textured paint on a feature wall. But it was time-consuming to apply.

I used to send the boys snipe hunting to get them out of my hair. They finally caught on to what I was doing.

Some jokes are harmeless enough...and really amuse the player and hopefully eventually the "victim."

That's a shame. Maybe if you search under 'Users' for topffer it might come up but it's not important. Enjoy your day.

@judyev If Vince is getting under your feet at home just send him to the hardware shop to ask for a long weight. My mother sent my gullible aunt to the pharmacy for a packet of round square ovals, to the paint shop for a tin of tartan paint. Many’s a young apprentice has been sent for a bucket of blue steam.
