A very superstitious man

In May 1875 several newspapers from Paris are relating the death at the Grand-Hôtel of an american millionnaire, a banker named John Burke. He was attributing his fortune to a lucky talisman. He searched several years for the talisman he wanted : a hanged man's rope, a highly desired item. In the early 1860's he attended the arrest in Omaha of a terrible thug, a herculean black man ; the mob came, took him out of jail and lynched the man on a long branch of a tree, which was above a deep lake. Burke decided that it was this rope that he wanted. He waited 48 hours and came during the night. There was a terrible wind pushing the clouds, and times to times a moonlight was showing the dead body swinging above the lake, with a vulture on his head. He fixed his knife to a stick, climbed on the branch, and started to cut the rope near the neck of the dead. However... the wind... a bad move... and a moment later he was sitted on the shoulders of the dead body. The rope was half cut, the branch was bending, the lake was deep and the vultures hungry. The only positive point was that he had still his knife. Holding the rope with the right hand, he ended to cut it with the left hand and the dead body felt in the lake, doing a big splash. Then he managed to climb on the branch. Soon after he started to make a fortune that he attributed to the rope and ordered to have it buried with him. Doctor Bayle, who embalmed him, respected his will. This was sounding like a fake news. I had a look at the archives of Paris online, and not a John Burke died in the neighborhood of the Grand-Hôtel in 1875. Done. There are a couple of anglicism inside the text testifying of a foreign origin. There was no more than a handful of Americans able to write a short and good horror novel like this one in the 1870's. I thought at Ambrose Bierce, who was in England in 1875, but could not find a similar novel. I summed up, but you have the synopsis. The vultures are called "birds". If somebody has an idea, you will get my lastful gratitude. Have you a talisman ? What is it ? I bought a "buho de la suerte" in Spain, an owl bringing luck. However I wonder if we can buy a good lucky talisman ? If it works, why somebody would sell it ? I guess a four-leaf clover, an iron horse, or anything found is better. Including a hanged man's rope, but they are starting to be rare.

Goodness, that's a horror story for sure. I remember hearing one over the radio when I was very small. A guy murdered someone, sat him up on his shoulders and started wading out into a lake to dispose of his body. But rigor mortis set in and the man's legs clamped on to the murderer's shoulders and body and they both went down. Gave me nightmares for weeks.

@topffer I searched using a couple of keywords but didn't come up with anything. I'm sure you've had some really interesting experiences over the years.

What an interesting story. Glad to see you here. I don't have any lucky talismans. Maybe that's why I don't have good luck? :-) Have a good week.

Glad to see you ! You don't need only a talisman, you need one that works, and I have not found mine yet.

I do not like that man´s choice of that type of talisman for me it would be utterly against what I think. I think that you can give power to anything that you want to believe in and if it brings you comfort then that is it. A lucky Owl I hope it brings you much luck tops. Having such a talisman as that man had well if he really ever had it would not let me sleep at night. Much do I prefer something like the figure of an Angel a very small one will do.

@topffer I would not be surprised if the Guardian Angel of that poor man resigned. I like the idea of a St. Christopher but never bring myself to get one. Again I would prefer the face of an Angel in silver or in an image that would do also. St. Christopher is a nice legend if he is one that is. Don´t like hangman´s ropes at all I am silly enough to go and try to cut the very rope of anyone just how I feel.

I am also not sure that I would like a hanged man's rope for talisman. I can hardly understand how it can bring luck. The guardian angel of the hanged man resigned... My owl perhaps does not bring luck, but it is more nice to see than a rope. I have had a saint Christopher in my cars during years. He is supposed to protect travelers, although it is more a legend than a real man. And in orthodox churches saint Christopher is shown with the face of a dog. These medals are also of the talisman kind.

I do not think talismans are connected with religion, one can be an atheist and superstitious.

Cool story even if it was fake news. I don't really have a talisman. My mother says I'm lucky though.

I thought it was fake when I read it, if it was true he would not have given details on the way he had gotten his talisman. But, indeed, it is a cool story, and well written, probably from a good writer. I also do not complain, I have had more good than bad luck. However the bad falls often in a squadron, and when it happens, a talisman may be useful.
