A memento from the past

Vince is one of seven children, of which he is the second youngest. His father was a railway guard in Western Australia and the railways played a large part in the lives of the family. His oldest brother is ten years older than Vince and became a station-master. Another brother became an engineer and also worked in the railways. His parents were devout Catholics and they were staunch supporters of their parish.
When plans for a new Catholic cathedral for Bunbury were drawn up, the whole congregation helped in whatever way they could. A cyclone in 2005 shifted the cathedral on its foundations and it was demolished. Our niece souvenired a brick from the cathedral and you can see it in the photo together with a plaque giving a short explanation. The men of the parish helped with carting bricks and lumber while the ladies supplied meals and refreshments.
The youngest brother cut the brick in half then Vince mounted the two halves on two pieces of jarrah. There is one for each of the two oldest brothers.

They are truly convinced Catholics and the brick has great sentimental value !

@changjiangzhibin89 Yes, she would have been a teenager. When she married, the three eldest children were born in Bunbury so there is a strong connection with the parish.

@simone10 We have plenty to pass on but we don't have, and won't be having, any grandchildren. One son has a very small apartment and lives on the other side of Australia and the other lives in Ireland so could only take small things home. I have a nephew who would take some of his grandparents' items as he was very close to them

We really, really HATE errors and are always tut-tutting over all sorts of public notices that have mistakes. With anything like this, we proof-read each other's stuff very carefully and endlessly discuss the best wording to have. It's surprising how many mistakes occur in very fancy public works notices where there is no excuse for any errors.

@JudyEv I noticed yesterday that the notice in the grounds of our crematorium has been fixed to read “this crematorium operates a one way driving system”. Previously the word ‘driving’ had been omitted. The plastic refuse bin however still has the instruction in it “No hot ashes”.
