In Trouble For Honking At Cops

Ah. Good ole clickbait at the hands of Porwest! You're welcome. But hey, I have not been around here much lately. But still, from time to time I have been popping in. Hello to all of my fellow MyLot friends by the way. I am alive and well and still kicking and breathing. In case you were wondering. Well, it's not total clickbait. I did indeed honk at two cops. But it was not the cops I was in trouble with. I was making a left turn onto a short road to enter the parking lot for Ruler Foods when the cop in front of me saw one his fellow cops coming down that same road. The cop in front of me STOPPED, and wanted to chat with the other cop. But, my butt end was in traffic right behind him, and seeing cars coming straight at me... I gave the coppers the HORN! The one cop to the left of me looked at me, and I saw the cop in front of me glance in his side mirror at me, I signaled to the cop to the left of me to simply say, "I am in the road. Yo are going to cause an accident." I think the cop in front of me realized the situation and pulled ahead into the Ruler parking lot. I thought for sure he would come around and have a chat with me. But he did not. I think he realized he was in the wrong, and had I done that in front of him to chat with a friend he'd have flipped the lights on and pulled me over. It was my wife yelling at me. "You DID NOT just honk at a COP!!!" "Yes I did," I barked back. "I'm going to get hit!" All in all it all went well. I did not get hit. The cop got out of my way. No further words or gestures were exchanged. I think all (except maybe my wife) understood the situation. Cop or not cop, you don't stop in the middle of the road to have a conversation. Period. And if you do, I will treat you as an idiot, big badge on the side door or not.

Glad to see you here. You've been missed. You had to get out of traffic. I'm glad the cop realized that! Have a great Sunday.

@LindaOHio We really do, don't we. And just like family sometimes we bicker and banter. And disagree. We even block each other sometimes. I have a couple of cousins I have not spoken to in years.

You as well, and glad I have been missed. I will probably start working my way back in here a bit more. I kinda miss the place too and all of my great people here too.

I am happy the cop saw the situation, and did what he was suppose to.

Me too. I almost thought I might have to shut down an ego. But that was not the case.

@popciclecold I think most cops are understanding, and not out to be tough guys. But of course there are those few.

That's good that they didn't come after you and try to cause trouble, you knew that they were in the wrong and it's sad that you had to show them that.

I am not sure that he realized in the moment what was happening, or that I was behind him with my butt in traffic. Neither of them gave me a nice look, but I did gesture to the one to the left of me when he looked at me funny that cars were coming and that they were blocking traffic, and the one in front of me moved along...so the message might have been clear who was in the right, and it happened to be me.

@hillhjill Yep. They gave me a bit of a look, but I think quickly figured it out and it made sense to them what was up.

You'd think the cops would be first and foremost to know that. But I gave them a quick reminder.

@Butterfingers Sorry to hear that. In the U.S. citizens actually have quite a lot of power. Most of it comes from the Constitution. Many Americans actually forget about their rights under the law, and when citizens do not know their rights, the law can sometimes take advantage.

People in this country are holding cops very accountable these days, and I think for some of them it is becoming clear that they need to remember that they work for us. Not the other way around. We pay their salaries and they are here to protect and to serve. They are also not above the law.

Good for you. It was obviously dangerous to stay where you were.

Which is why I gave him the horn. At least he seemed to acknowledge his error.

I totally agree with your last paragraph. Good thing he moved out of the way and did not come back to you for a chat. But in general, is honking at a cop car allowed?

PERFECTLY legal. Yes. You can give a cop the horn. They may not like it anymore than anyone else does. But there is no law against it.
