Am I wasting my time? . . . Nah.

As I am sewing these many masks, I found myself asking myself if I was wasting my time.
It may be likely that I will get them sewed for my family members and then the mask mandates will lift.
I will be stuck with about a dozen masks for myself. What a waste! If we do not have to wear them.
Then I had a little talk with myself.
I said, remember, you used to BUY masks to wear while you mowed. It helped you breath less dust and pollen. You did not get sore throats. Now you will have masks to reuse.
You know, they say that in places like Japan, that have lived through SARS original, people still will wear masks to be polite, if they have cold symptoms.
I think they probably will be good to wear if cleaning with strong smelling things.
[bI KNOW][/b] that they do not keep out small particles and pollutants, but I also know they keep out some.
I know when I bought the cheap masks from the store, they helped some. I had fewer troubles with things I breathed in.
Pretty much that is why I do not fuss about wearing them now. I believe they help some
I also feel like if I am going to wear masks I do not want to throw them in the landfill. I also want them to be fun. Unique. Me!
So no, I do not feel I am wasting my time.
I will add, people who do not change and wash their masks can get other infections besides covid-19, at least according to things I have read.
People who do not wash their masks also have skin issues, just like not removing makeup.
Some advice I read suggested that if it is hot, sweaty, and stuffy, you should change your mask at least once during the day.
I wore the same mask for a six hour inservice yesterday. I did take it off while I ate my socially distant lunch, in my car. In the afternoon it felt sticky, and "dirty" and sort of uncomfortable. I wish I had changed it. I am going to take spares with me to work in the future. It just makes sense.
Oh, and I will likely wear them out in the cold. Even if I wrap a wool scarf over my face as well. It will be more comfortable. I will use them.

I had to think about it. I tend to "make an elephant" out of things a lot. You know, if a little is good a lot is better. I wanted to be clear in my purpose and intent.

@GardenGerty I go overboard at times and get far to carried away.

I like the washable kind. You know, I am not sure they do all that much good, but it does not hurt and if it blocks the concentration of virus, it probably helps. Our pastor said we need to be good citizens and wear masks since the governor mandates them.

@GardenGerty True. It's uncomfortable, but if it helps at all, it's the least we could do.

Yeah I'm still going to keep mine and probably wear it in the winter also when I go back to work if I do. Not sure when they are having me come back because I can't wear a mask for too long because of my breathing problems and I have heart issues too. I been working from home mostly. But I have yet to find a good mask that won't fog up my glasses I am still looking. I always wash mine after every use - I washed my nieces this week too as she said they never wash theirs. I reminded my sister they need to because of germs etc. But there's always a use for a mask and to keep on hand in case we need them again in the future - hoping we don't though.

I do not know what kind of work you do. My sister-in-law has a cubicle. As long as she is alone in her cubicle, she can have the mask off, but it must be handled a particular way. She works for medical records in a health care system. I work with kids. If we are just adults in a room and six feet or more apart, we can take them off. If we are in the hall or any common area we must wear them.

That is my plan. Do you intend to do a lot of substituting? I heard we already have people saying that they will be available this year. I added a sentence because your post reminded me that I plan to wear them in the winter to make the cold air more breathable.

@paigea We had one para who had been hired, but she has lupus and decided not to work. Our community has not had a severe outbreak. I know and trust the schools and they are taking lots of precautions from the custodians up to make sure we return safely. October will likely be our test. We always seem to have a lot of outbreaks starting then.

@GardenGerty I still intend to sub. We have been so isolated, Hubby is feeling unsure about me working.
I am considering going to fewer schools just to ensure I am not adding to the spread. The province is not doing enough to ensure school procedures are safe, so I am hoping the school division does have a lot of safety measures. I will do everything I can to be safe and to keep others safe.

Yes, and they must be okay with how they feel and look and function or they would not have done it all these years.

They (whomever they are) recommend having as many masks as you do underwear.
When we wash them and reuse them, we naturally will need more.
And they will wear as they are laundered and worn over and over.
I have some that we have not worn yet that are a little heavier, but soft, for the cold months.
They are saying that this could be part of our lives until 2022.

I would not be at all surprised. That is why I want to send three a piece for my daughter's family.

You have many uses for them, so very worth making them.

It is not too bad. Today I just ate in the break room. I am resisting buying food from restaurants and such or fast food, since I have good food at home I can take.
