That time the world ended (2)

I'm sitting in front of my cousin as we ride the moped down to the beach. His youngest son sandwiched in between us, his tear-stained cheek resting against my back. The moped was the only vehicle we could find so we were making do with it. Reginald had given us rope to tie the supplies onto, and warned us to be careful of looters. He was our plus one, a mechanic before everything changed. He seemed like a nice guy, but I was suspicious of him. I'm suspicious of everyone now.
"Do you think that Gertrude will be safe with Reginald?" I ask when we finally arrive at the supply cache. I take the little boy into my arms and let him sob against my chest as I look up at my cousin.
He turns away from me without answering and points to the ground beside the bike, indicating that I should remain here. I feel exposed here, vulnerable to attacks from the desperate, but I stay where I am. Each minute feels like an eternity while I wait, remaining vigilant and ready to flee if necessary. My cousin eventually returns, his arms full. "The man here indicated a place for us to get grain. We need to hurry though, it's first come - first serve."
Okay - I'm going to stop my narrative here. This was based off of a dream. In the dream, the world had essentially ended. The economy had fallen, people were scared and vulnerable. Supplies were low and we had to split into groups to try and survive. More things happened in the dream, including some trouble on the way back home, but that would make the post too long.. and well, I'm guessing most people haven't even made it to this point. This is part 2 - and where I'm going to leave it.

I thought so. It was a dream...and a very strange dream!

@ScribbledAdNauseum I'm not familiar with the Handmaid's Tale.

@LindaOHio It is a Margaret Atwood book that was made into a Hulu serial. It's a dystopian novel where the goverment is overthrown and replaced by a group of elite. They freeze everyone's bank accounts and enslave them, essentially. The women are used for their fertility and for running errands. I didn't watch but one season.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That sure is different. I have Hulu now and could check it out. Thanks.
