Store-bought strawberries were a miss

I was at the supermarket Sunday and decided to get some strawberries. They were on sale for $3.99. I don't consider that cheap but I bought them anyway because I didn't have strawberries for a while and craved for them. They seemed to look good and, after smelling them, it seemed like they were gonna be full of flavor.
When I got home and opened the carton I was not hit with that sweet strawberry aroma that seemed to be present when I smelled them at the store. They didn't even smell like strawberries. And not all of them were bright red either.
I like to eat my strawberries with sugar and sour cream. I prepped them that way and took a spoonful, expecting an explosion of sweet juicy flavor in my mouth. The berries were indeed juicy but they were not very flavorful. I wasn't a fan.

Strawberries are a winter crop and are not in season anymore. The harvest was many months ago, at least here in Florida. Maybe other places in the country are still harvesting, or perhaps the strawberries are being imported from South America, but I just assume any that can be bought now are not going to be as flavorful as the ones that are available right at the beginning of the strawberry season.

I know around here the farms sell strawberries in June. Maybe end of May. I had no idea that they were a winter crop. Unless that's the case where you live.

And when you spend good money on them you expect them to taste delicious. I wonder why they smelled so good at the store but not at home. Unless the darn mask made me think I smelled one thing but it wasn't the case.

@lovebuglena Hmmm, that could be the case. Or, some fruits and vegetables have been genetically engineered to look good or smell good, but the tradeoff has been a loss in taste. I know that's been a big issue with tomatoes over the past few decades.

Maybe it was the lighting. But that would not affect the smell. Maybe it was my mask.

They should at least slightly smell like strawberries. They didn't.

Thanks. It was disappointing, especially since they were not cheap.
