Well, it's called Cinderella plant. I was not aware of this name of the plant till I read one of the mylot posts a few minutes back. I have known this plant from the time I came to this planet. Both sets of my grandparents had them.. A few of them in their garden. And now mom has one. They last for few years like any strong shrub would and you can propagate them through cutting. We call it Brahamkalam... A flower that is considered to be a blessing from Heaven. This plant flowers only for one night in a year and it's mainly around July and August. The bloom lasts for few hours. I remember as a child we use to track the blooming each night in July and August. It is supposed that if you are the first one to witness the bloom, you bring luck to your family. And so if lady in the house witnesses it, the fortune and good luck and blessing from heaven will keep flowing to the house throughout the year. Lady of the house is the real anchor in the family. And we use to sit around the plant on the night of bloom and stay awake till the blooms closed and they do it around 3_5 AM. So it used to be a night out for whole family. And it was our way to show respect to the heavenly blessing. My mom shared this picture on 26 July this year when she got the bloom. She didn't want any one of her children and family to miss the heavenly blessing. I always thought of sharing it here but then it evaporated from my mind. Now as soon as I came across the Cinderella post, I went digging this photo and posting it here. . Isn't it a true blessing from heaven

Though not so common, people have it in their house. It's a symbol of luck. But if it doesn't bloom for five years, it's supposed to bring bad luck and curse. So I never had them. I don't want such things to come in my mind. It has been blooming in my native and mom's place for 40 years now.

I have heard of this plant, it is an Orchid cactus and the name Cinderella is just because it blooms only one night once a year. I have never seen one personally.

I was not aware of the name Cinderella. We call it Brahamkamal. Braham means Supreme and Kamal means lotus. It is considered lotus from heaven. I do not have one. It can be easily propagated from the cutting.

Yes. Cinderella is apt for it's beauty. In Hinduism, Braham means Supreme or Heavenly and Kamal is for lotus. So the name compares it to lotus from heaven.
