The moment I mentioned having a series of “Sally” songs this is probably the first one that popped into a lot of people’s heads. Oh, I can’t disappoint. I wouldn’t, either. Here’s today’s song with “Sally” in the title. #5: Lay Down Sally - Eric Clapton My dear mother of blessed memory LOVED this song. My dad didn’t even find it all that offensive. Understandable: this was a top 30 country hit when it came out in 1977. Of course, it was also a top five hit and has become a staple in Clapton’s career. Backstory: Clapton is a fan of the late Tulsa-based singer/songwriter JJ Cale (if you couldn’t figure that out by his cover of Cale’s “Cocaine”), so with this song he was looking to emulate Cale’s plains blues/country/rock sound. (That’s also probably why Clapton recorded “Tulsa Time,” although Cale did not write that.) This was his attempt to be JJ Cale. He may not have succeeded in that regard, but he did succeed in getting one of the biggest hits of his career. Lay Down Sally Written by Eric Clapton, Marcy Levy, and George Terry Recorded by Eric Clapton From Slowhand, 1977 There is nothing that is wrong:
