What (Else) Happened In The Year Of My Birth?

Without having any statistics at hand I know that there isn't a myLotter who'll nod their head murmuring, "Yes, I remember when that happened." It would have been Methuselah himself and I'm sure that he's not active on the site.
I was born in Saxony, in the south east of Germany, one and a half years before WW2* ended. Positive war related events I want to mention are:
- In January the Red Army ends the siege of Leningrad after 872 (!) days.
- In June the allies land in Normandy, France in the D-DAY operation.
My family didn't know what was happening in other parts of the world. Then there were only newspapers and the radio and what they got from them was fascist propaganda, of course. The internet has helped me to find out about the goings-on in the rest of the world.
- Also war-related but no fighting involved: The summer Olympics scheduled for London, aren't held due to the ongoing war.
- A 5.9 earthquake hits central New York.
- The Italian volcano Vesuvio erupts.
- The Netherlands experience the strongest Hurricane of the century (wind force 12).
- Roosevelt is elected for a 4th term as President of the USA (Now only two terms are allowed).
- The average cost for house rent in the USA is $ 50 per month. A loaf of bread costs 10 cent.
- In Britain the Education Act lifts the ban which forbids women teachers to marry. Married women can become teachers !!
- Gandhi is freed from prison.
- The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City hosts a jazz concert for the first time. The performers are Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Artie Shaw, Roy Eldridge and Jack Teagarden.
-The singer Joe Cocker is born (He died in 2014).
- The Swedish woman Astrid Lindgren writes the children's book Pippi Longstocking which has been a bestseller ever since.
- Bob Hope moderates the 16th Oscar ceremony. The film Casablanca with the actors Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergmann wins three Oscars.
- The film ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ with the actors Cary Grant and Peter Lorre has its world premiere.
Does any of these events mean anything to you?
-----
*WW2 ended on 8th May, 1945.

I was on Vesuvio twice. You can see Capri from the top on a clear day.
Was the man killed by lightning? I wonder why he went up when the weather conditions weren't good. Or did the lightning come out of the blue?
I'll see your answer tomorrow. It's already past midnight on the continent.

Most of those events mean a lot to me although I wasn´t borm. I was born on June 1945. My grandfather, a German, had come to Chile before the first world war and married a lady from Spanish parents. He could never return to Germany and never saw his parents again.

I loved Bob Hope and enjoyed the singer Joe Cocker. I never read the book, but enjoyed the Pippi Longstocking movie when I was a child.

24 Jan 1980 - The United States announced that it would begin the sale of military equipment (but not weapons) to the People's Republic of China.

We have watched ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ a few months ago, I bought the DVD because I remember I watched this movie when I was very young. Casablanca is one of my old time favorite movies, I will watch again soon.
The year I was born:
- the Treaty of Paris establishes the European Coal and Steel Community, Italy joined the same year.
- In Yokohama, Japan, a fire on a train kills more than 100.
- Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland, premiered in London.
- The first Volkswagen Type 1 was produced in Uitenhage (South Africa).

I can relate to a lot that you've mentioned. D-Day, Joe Cocker, Bob Hope and Arsenic and Old Lace to name a few. Fascinating post. So much went on, including your birth!
