Can't view content unless ad blocker is turned off

I googled something online and clicked on a site to read the article on what I was searching for. The site loaded but a pop-up appeared telling me that I have ad blocker on. I could not read the article unless I turned off the ad blocker. I did not want to do that so I closed the site. This is not the first time something like this has happened to me. It's frustrating and ridiculous. I should not be required to allow ads on sites in order to read something online. I wonder why some websites do this...
