Do you remember the Looney Toons cartoon featuring Taz the Tasmanian devil? Well, today as I was putting my signature to some petitions for animals I cam across the Tasmanian devil. Those of you who live in Australia know this animal has been a part of the country for many years. However, at one time it seemed the Tasmanian devil might become extinct, At present the animal has been pushed back from all other places in Australia except for Tasmania due to the dingo dogs, Another threat has been infectious cancer known as devil facial tumour and it cut the population by 50%. In the wild today, you can find only 25,000 Tasmanian devils, There is an organization that is looking to preserve this species, The Australian NGO Aussie Ark program breeding program grew from 44 to 200 devils in 2011. Then another 11 Tasmanian devils were released into a wildlife sanctuary north of Sydney. For the first time in a long time they are now back in the mainland of Australia, So now it looks like the future is bright again for the little devils those Tasmanian devils. They might be wild but they sure are cute, They are scavengers and feed on carrion such as roadkill, Sometimes they attack poultry, Little devils produce in as little as three weeks but remain in mama's pouch for five months,

As far as I knew, these are endemic to Australia and mainly Tasmania. However, it is good to know that their conservation efforts are yielding good results.

Yes I remember the cartoon and I had seen the animal in the zoo before during visits. They are cute but not often that they will appear in the open when we visit them.

Taz was one of my favorite cartoon characters--still is. I'm glad they're coming back.

I saw that on the news here in Australia. They said something like that it is the first time in 5000 years that they have been on Mainland Australia. Apparently, they picked a new habitat that matches very well their usual home in Tasmania, as the environments are very similar. The Tasmanian tiger is reportedly extinct, both on the mainland, and on Tasmania, but every so often, in my local paper, one is spotted, in the bush here too, so who knows, maybe they live on somewhere still too.
