I did hear the news yesterday about the Holy Father saying he is for civil union. The news further said that one bishop from America has already made a blatant criticism.
Of course I was bothered. The Sacrament of Matrimony is, far as the Catholic Church is concerned, between a man and a woman.
I listened some more, and there was not even a clip about Pope Francis specifically saying something about such.
Sigh. It wasn't true at all.
Such news is irritating. Very.

From what l understand is civil union but not the church that will officiate but they would be given recognition by law so they can be legally recognized and the rights inherent to a married couples. The church would not still officiate the union but respect it under civil laws.

That could be an interpretation far as Philippine Law is concerned. We recognize civil marriage.
I do think though that the comment included in the documentary is not the same context as what Pope Francis could have meant in the interview.
Let us wait for the explanation from the Holy See.

@eileenleyva I think it’s similar to legal separation the church does not recognize legal separation but they respect the laws that state imposes on their citizens. You’ll have to seek for a separate dissolution of marriage under the church if you want to be married in church again.

@rsa101 That is correct.
The matter at hand though includes a dogma on the Sacrament of Matrimony that only the church could clarify.
