Spicing Up Your Mac And Cheese

I absolutely love macaroni and cheese. But I do not buy the "good" stuff like Kraft. It's just too darned expensive, and I find that the other boxed generic varieties are actually almost as good. I can get a box of this golden goodness at Aldi for 29 cents, and it's about that price at Ruler too, for about 33 cents per box. But even though just plain old macaroni and cheese is delicious. I like to change things up a bit sometimes. Instead of using milk, maybe toss in some sour cream. Go a step above and use cream cheese instead of milk. Or toss in some ranch dressing as a substitute for milk. I do this kind of thing quite a lot and it never turns out bad. And there really isn't much you can do wrong. Do you ever spice up your macaroni and cheese?

Or maybe throw in some smoked Gouda with the packaged cheese! (No, I never spice it up. )

(No, I never spice it up. ) You are a damned liar! But gouda sounds VERY good. Hmm. You are going to have me doing that now. Well, not RIGHT now. I have no gouda right now. But how could that be bad?

@porwest — how could you tell? Something else I like to do is crumble seasoned croutons on top, making it similar to a casserole.

@FourWalls That sounds good too. That's why I like posts like this. You get some pretty yummy ideas to work with.

We only have Kraft brand here . I wish there are other brands. I haven't try those things but next time I will try that

Once in a blue moon, I'll put hotdogs in it and split it with my husband. I don't buy the box very often, though because I just don't eat it near as much as I used to.

I haven't tried to have a spicy one. But I would love to try it.

Well, not spicy per se. But spiced up, as in, just adding different flavors to something.

I love old fashioned baked mac and cheese with buttered bread crumbs on top. I bet ranch dressing would be good.

I like homemade too, and that style of it. I am just too lazy sometimes to whip it up from scratch.

I like melted cheese; but I hardly ever eat macaroni and cheese. I might add a little chili powder to mine.

@porwest Not if you use it sparingly.

@LindaOHio I could probably stand just a little bit of it. I do use it in chili. But VERY nominally. I do like a bit more spice than my wife does. But not much more.

Not that different, but I do add say like some extra shredded cheese or tuna or something, maybe hot sauce.

It's also cool to experiment with cooking. My mom usually put Mayonaise on our Macaroni Salad...

I love mac n cheese. I don’t think I’ve spiced it up though or maybe like with Turkey bacon :)

I cannot find really good mac and cheese. The best kind I ever tried was frozen Stouffer's. My childhood favourite was Kraft Deluxe mac and cheese but the last time I had it I found it was too salty now, So the search continues and I agree that spicing it up can also be great, So my quest for mac and cheese continues,

We do not do mac and cheese from a box often. We don't make it ourselves much either. But I'd never think to not follow the exact box instructions and add my own stuff. Good idea. And that price is super cheap. Wonder how much Lidl sells it for. No Aldi near me.

I have cooked smoke sausage and mixed it in before. That's about as crazy as I get with it.

I never thought of Kraft mac and cheese as being expensive. Isn't it like $1 or something? I make my own stuff from scratch.

I do! Sometimes I'll put some bacon in it. Or I'll throw in some cream cheese for that extra creaminess - not really sure if that helps, but I like to think that it does. I once mistakenly threw in some mozzarella cheese, and it triggered me as it reminded me of cobwebs. I vowed never to try that again!

I add real cheese to mine and it tastes really good.
