The Hallow and the Hollow.

Today is the feast of All Saints. A friend introduced me to a new saint - St. Fiacre, the patron of gardeners. He concocted potions for the infirm, I suppose.
But that is not what I'd like to discuss, because on facebook, I was frightened by many a ghastly sight of macabre creatures, including pumpkins.
Why has Halloween turned into a grisly night of trick or treat, I'd let the Western world actually explain it.
But here's my supposition.
Hallow means holy. In the Lord's Prayer, we say, in old English "hallowed be Thy Name." As the solemnity of saints falls on November 1st, the Christians did, by tradition, celebrate the eve, or the night before the feast. So, October 31st became a Hallow Evening, shortened to Hallow Eve, like Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. As time passed by, the evening became an een, thus halloween.
Then, the following day, the 2nd of November happens to be a day for the souls. The Christians probably wanted to hit two birds with one stone and celebrated the eve for the souls also on the 31st of October.
As time passed by, the merry makers had probably thought that the Halloween means something hollow or empty, alluding to the empty tombs in the cemeteries because the souls were allowed to wander. Thus, the horrible and sinister depiction of a Halloween.
Just trying to make things right again. Happy All Saints Day.

A blessed feast of the Saints. Attended the midmorning mass today and glad that the pews in front of me which are mostly unoccupied were fully occupied. We still practice 3 persons per pew.

Glad you already can attend Mass in the church. We are still not allowed to do so. I still hear Mass through the Divine Word. Fr. Jerry's voice is very soothing to listen to. He said we are saints in the making. Yehey!

@florelway We have to be 'just' in this life, and that's the only way we can squeeze through heaven's gate.

@eileenleyva wow I am glad to personally know a saint. Yes, if we led an exemplary life here, heaven awaits.

Happy All Saints Day.
Well I am not much aware of these and so can't comment. But it's something interesting to know. Yes with passing times many things and celebration undergo changes and get an all together different meaning.

With Halloween, the meaning became the exact opposite. Celebrating the saints meant celebrating holiness. But the trick or treat costumes of vampires and werewolves are sinister. I really do not know how the parents explain to their children why they should done bloody frankenstein and zombie costumes and have fun going around the hood asking for candies.

@eileenleyva Well many might be just following it like following the masses without actually knowing what's its all about or what is the real logic behind it.

@arunima25 Incumbent upon the elders and the parents to teach the children well.
