Official notices should be checked and rechecked for errors - IMHO (in my humble opinion)

On our trip home from the north of Western Australia, we called in to see the Geraldton memorial to the cruiser, HMAS Sydney II. During World War II, the Sydney was engaged in a battle with the German ship HSK Kormoran and went down with the loss of 645 men. I remembered that there was a grammatical error in one of the plaques. Others on myLothave mentioned how they hate seeing these types of errors so I took a photo of the offending plaque. Maybe you can spot the error in the second paragraph.

Its a common error and I think I make it a lot but you're right, it shouldn't have happened on a plaque like this.

I agree @JudyEv It seems that these days people just use excuses like "Everyone makes mistakes, it's just human" instead of "Let me fix that mistake, sorry about that" I was taught to strive for accuracy.

@rebelann I think, like you, on anything official, being accurate is very important.

This is really quite an important memorial and will be seen by thousands. It's pretty slack in my opinion.

I wouldn't be able to read that even if I tried. But, everyone makes mistakes. This was a big one apparently. Not so easy to correct I guess depending on what's made of and how it was constructed.

Certainly it wouldn't be easy to correct but on a public monument like this, there shouldn't be any errors.

@JudyEv I know, but sadly people still make them. It's funny if you can see them through.

oh my word! one'd think with the funds spent fer such that'd be 'xactly how much care would'a been taken. how sad such's left to be ('r perhaps the folks who'd such done 're fightin' fer a corrected'un?) seen by all.

On something so 'official' and important, you'd think they'd take better care to have things exact.

@crazyhorseladycx We had a lot of trouble with my brother's headstone too. In the end they did a second one but even that wasn't precisely as we wanted it. In the beginning, we had to say what we wanted and sign a form saying we'd stick to that. But they changed the format themselves which meant there wasn't room for my sister's details when one day, she'll be buried in the same plot. It was very annoying.

I knew both you and Malu would pick up the error very quickly. We've spoken about it before, haven't we?

In the line 'welcoming home it's loved ones' there shouldn't be an apostrophe in 'it's'. There should only be an apostrophe when you want to say 'it is' and you shorten it to it's.

The typos I saw in the Pioneer Village at Spring Mill State Park would make a proofreader drunk. I agree with you, they should be checked. How hard is it to have an extra set of eyes look something over? Especially something that short. We aren't talking proofreading War and Peace here....

Yes, that's true but I think it is a great shame. However, I'm a grammar Nazi. lol

I'm so particular about posts. I hate to see errors etched in stone!
