I have seen people rejoicing. Finally those filthy rich people will PAY under a Biden administration. The time has come, they say, for the rich to pay their fair share.
But the truth is, those taxes will be paid by YOU. Not THEM.
Entertain my thought for just a second here. THEY, the rich, employ you. They will hire less people, lower your wages, and reduce your benefits to pay the tax.
THEY, the rich run the chains and restaurants and stores. THEY will simply raise their prices to pay the tax.
THEY, the rich make the products and offer the goods and services you buy. They will simply raise the price on the goods and services you buy to pay the tax.
THEY, the rich own many of the rental properties you live in. They will simply raise your rent to pay the tax. THEY, the rich, own the banks that you pay your mortgage to, and they will simply raise the interest you pay to pay the tax.
THEY, the rich, own the telephone companies, the cable companies, the Internet providers, the Netflix, the Hulu...
THEY, the rich will simply raise the cost of all of this to pay the tax.
THEY, the rich own the utility companies. They own the gas stations. They own everything. And THEY, the rich will ask YOU to pony up the difference.
And THEY, the rich, will GET IT. Why? Because everything you want, everything you need, and everything you will ever have is provided to you by them.
THEY, the rich. And if you want it? A job. A gallon of gas. A running light bulb. A car that drives. A house for shelter. A plate of food on the table...
THEY, the rich are going to sell it to you.
So, tax them to death. Take every penny you can out their pocket. The reality is that THEY, the rich, will not pay for a single penny of it.
YOU will pay for ALL of it.

I beg to disagree with you. The taxes which the RICH are paying are computed from the income they get from their businesses. They pay it accordingly.
Now your question, the people are paying their taxes to pay the salaries and allowances of the government officials who in return aren't honestly declaring their true income. Their accountant doctor it.
In fairness by the way of the RICH if they don't pay their taxes, can the government survive and provide the needs of the people?

@Nakitakona The government is not supposed to provide for the needs of the people. The function of the government is to provide for things like national security, military, police, and fire protection. The economy is what is supposed to provide for the needs of the people. And the rich directly contribute to the economy.

@GodServantme In the United States the poor do not pay taxes, aside from things like sales taxes. In the United States over 50% of the population do not pay any taxes at all.

YOu will never convince them of that, they accuse us of drinking the Koolaid but I want to know what they are drinking cause t makes them delusional. If you raise the business tax or the minimum wage employers will just employ fewer employees. And if you pay $15 an hour to people who pass out hamburgers what do skilled workers make, that isn't equality it is unreality.

I know. But I still try to drive it home. I realize I will always fail miserably in my attempt. lol. It is what it is. I think a lot of people also forget when they make the remark that the rich should pay their fair share, that 50% of the population pays no taxes at all.

That is not the kind of world I want to live in. There surely must be another way

This is the world we have always lived in, and it will never change. If you have something that someone needs or wants, you will be able to sell it to them, and the cost of making whatever you sell is a product of ALL of the cost of making it. The raw materials, the equipment cost, the labor, AND the tax you have to pay. It all goes into the cost of providing the good or service. There is NO way around that.

@porwest Maybe not in my lifetime. But if the earth survives, human beings must learn.

I don't like the idea that very rich people can pay less tax than those they employ - that is what happens with all the dodges they seem able to employ, and the recent revelations about Trump's recent tax payments would seem to bear that out.

@porwest Everyone who gains an income, however it is obtained, is honour bound to pay a share of it in income tax. That is the way it works in the UK, where you pay at a higher rate if you have a higher income. Attempts to evade tax are crimes that are punished by the courts. That is the way it should be.

@indexer Technically out tax system is not so different from yours. The rich pay proportionately higher taxes. But there is some truth to the thought that there are many loopholes. However, those loopholes the rich use are not the fault of the rich. They were written into the tax code by the legislators.
The one thing that gets missed often times, to my mind, on this discussion of the rich paying their fair share is the contribution the rich actually make to society. While not a tax, really, it's what the rich do with their money that affords us the opportunity to have a job and the things we need to survive.
And of course in this country, and I believe in yours as well, there is a lot of opportunity for the average citizen to join the ranks of the rich if they really want it.

We, the rich, do not PAY taxes. We collect them, and recoup the cost of them. That's just the way it works. If I am a landlord and my property tax goes up, your rent goes up proportional to the tax. I am, as a landlord, looking for an 8% ROI. I will get my 8% regardless of my cost of operation because I will pass along the cost of my operation to the tenants. The tenant gains nothing. The tax IS collected. I DO write the check. But the money I received to write the check came from my tenants. NOT from my own bank account. I did not essentially pay the tax. I charged my tenants the difference and still kept my 8%.
This will never change. I will never pay the tax. I will always pass the cost of my tax onto the consumer. ALWAYS.

Not sure why this would confuse you. It's pretty cut and dry. You need bread. The rich make the bread. You have to pay for the bread. The cost of the bread includes all of the cost of making the bread, which includes the tax the breadmaker must pay, and a little profit as well.
Did the rich man pay the tax on the money he made from selling the bread? Or did you?

Yeah, I know. And, it sucks. Sure Biden says he's planning to raise taxes. However, he claims it's only on those making 40k or more. What the average American doesn't realize, that's a lot more than you think. That's struggling business owners who've been forced to close their doors. It's franchisees that are still doing well, because they never closed. It's the average middle or working-class employee. So, like you stated, prices will go up to accommodate it. And, that's nothing to say about taxes for those below 40k. Promised tax cuts won't happen. I get what he's trying to do, but he's going about it the wrong way.

It is kind of like the mentality of the renter. They'll say, "It's great that if the furnace goes out, I don't have to pay for it." When in reality, over time, the cost of the furnace repair gets built into future rent payments. Nothing is free, and when we are paying someone for a good or service, all of the cost of getting that good or service to market is built into the cost of the good or service.
