So many Donnybrooks

MyLotter Fiacre (@xFiacre) spoke recently about a potential holiday in Newcastle, in County Down, Northern Ireland. We have a Newcastle in Australia in New South Wales and of course, there is a Newcastle in England. There is also at least one in the USA. Many town names are duplicated all over the world. Perhaps people are homesick for their home town so give the new one the same name. My home town is Donnybrook in south-west Western Australia. It was named after the district of Donnybrook in Dublin, Ireland and was given the name by a group of five Irishmen who tried to establish farms here in 1842. We drove through parts of Donnybrook when we were in Ireland and it seemed a leafy, upmarket suburb. There is also a Donnybrook in Cork in the Republic of Ireland. In Australia, there is a Donnybrook just north of Melbourne, Victoria, and another in Queensland, in the Moreton Bay area. According to my mate, Wikipedia, there was a former village in Canada called Donnybrook and towns in Oregon, North Dakota, and South Africa. Of course, a 'donnybrook' is also used to refer to a fight or brawl. Is your town or suburb name replicated elsewhere? Photo is of our entry sign.

I noticed a lot of duplication of roads and street names in US. Almost all cities have the same streets and avenues. Here in India this duplication is not so prominent but yes we do have a few. Like we have Aurnagabad in state of Maharashtra as well as in state of Bihar. We have Sonepur in Orissa as well as in Bihar. Well right now only these two cross my mind.

I know there is a Melbourne in Florida and of course the capital of Victoria is Melbourne. I'm sure there are many others.

@JudyEv Yes, thanks to our Liberty Bell! That always reminds me of the historic restarant in McComb named The Dinner Bell. It is in an old antebellum and styled back in those times. Unfortunately, they also have curtains that look to also be of the time period and could use a good cleaning but I suppose they fear they will fall apart.

@kareng I had to look up 'antebellum'. I've now done my learning for the day.

My village is Kampung Baru. Not the famous Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpur, but a Kampung Baru in the northern region. There are plenty Kampung Baru in Malaysia. In my district alone there's already 2 Kampung Baru. So we have to be a bit detail when mentioning our village's name to anyone. They might confuse it with somewhere else.

We had someone confuse 'our' Donnybrook with another one once. She wanted to buy something and pick it up but we were actually on the other side of the country to her. lol

That is interesting that this name repeats so many times for towns, I do not think there is another Daytona Beach anywhere but it was interesting when my husband and I traveled to the US at the end of the 1990s and discovered a township called Riga in Michigan and a Riga in the state of New York since we lived in Riga Latvia,

@JudyEv it must be for both those towns because who would even think of Riga Latvia probably when the immigrants first came to America,
