Cook the turkey, bake the pie

Obviously this is directed to people in the US who will celebrate Thanksgiving. It could generally be for all people who are looking forward to holidays of other sorts in this season. Many of us will not be able to celebrate in our tradition. We may not be with loved ones. It is ill advised to travel. This is directed mostly to myself. Do not spend your energy and resources grieving what will not be. Be thankful for what you have. Enjoy those you will be with. It will be my hubby and myself only for Thanksgiving. My brother and his wife are ill. My dad is dead. My other sister does not need exposed to a gathering. My daughter is more than six hundred miles away. My son is in jail. (first I have told you this) I am incredibly sad. Still, I will cook a turkey. Make some side dishes. Bake a pumpkin pie. Give thanks to God for the things that are good. I have a place to live. Compared to most of the world, I have plenty. I am loved, and I love these people who are away from me. I have a job. We are going through rough times, but I for one plan to come out on top. I will rejoice. I will carry on. I feel alone, but I am not. My turkey is thawing. How about you? Are you thankful for anything? Will you celebrate being alive?

I'm thankful for family and friends. For still having a job. For being able to pay my bills.

Yes, even if family is not present, we still have them. I am enjoying what I have and what I can do.

I wanted to go to NY to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. They declared the county an orange zone which means it is lousy with the virus. I was willing to take a chance on flying but I would have to isolate for two weeks before I left and another two weeks when I got there. So, I am here by myself and do not feel in a holiday mood.

That is why I am giving myself this pep talk and inviting people to join in. You can pretty well know that I will be around here for a good part of the holiday. I am sorry you will not be joining family and friends in person, only in spirit.

@akalinus It is such a strange time.If we were to travel it would be by car but that will not happen until spring at the earliest.

@GardenGerty I have not seen my kids there in four years. My son and I drove up there once a year but he has a different job now with no vacation. My best friend has made it down to Florida a couple of times and we met for dinner and twice a visit to a distant mutual friend.

I am thankful for many things. That is a good outlook you've suggested - to look towards what we have, rather than what we don't.

@GardenGerty I think I've got better at it as I've got older. I tend to let things go more.

That is what was going on in your family you couldn’t talk about. Terrible news . I am loving how with all you could complain about you showed how thankful you are for what you do have. We all need to think that way as much as we can. Our Turkey is thawing too. My husband will make it this year. My oven is a pain in the neck so I hope it will turn out okay. I filled the propane tank in September so that’s one less thing that could go wrong with it at least

This is probably all I will say about the downer sides of this. I did have a great visit with my daughter last night. It is her birthday today. Both my kids are good kids. And they are both probably older than you, but still mine, and still my kids. I wanted to just cook a chicken, but we had the turkey and hubby wanted it, so turkey it is.

@GardenGerty bad things happen to even the best people. I was a wild teen my friends and I always say it’s a miracle we were never arrested. We got damn lucky we never got caught is all!

I have not gone to the grocery store to get what we need for the holiday meal. My son just gave the money about an hour ago.

You will get to deal with crowds I suppose to do the shopping. Right now around here Wal Mart has the least expensive turkeys. Aldi's is a close second.

@GardenGerty - Went shopping yesterday, spent less than a hundred dollars and the crowds were not that bad. I only focused on getting the stuff for Thanksgiving. But there was an elderly couple in the grocery store making sure they bought black-eyed peas. In Texas we have a tradition of cooking black-eyed peas for the New Year. The lady said they wanted to make sure that had some on hand, just in case there was another lockdown and they couldn't get out of their home. I hadn't thought that far ahead. I was just trying to make it to Thursday.

Sometimes you can get just a turkey drumstick or thigh if you crave it. Originally I had planned to just roast a chicken for the two of us, but hubby really wants the turkey. So it is thawing.

I celebrate each day that i have here on earth. As you said we may be going through rough times but you will carry on. I may miss my family but i am giving them the gift of safety, at least in my own mind.

It'll be the usual here for mom and I. Minus my traditional gingerbread with coolwhip since we can't find the mix (pillsbury's) anywhere! Ugh. Always thankful here.
