'fter 2 days 'f no sun 'n intermittent drizzle, 'twas a pleasant surprise to see the wonders 'f glorious sunlight 'cross this High Plains. A tad chilly to tend much outdoors, so tackled 'ndoors 'nstead. Shall not bore ya with the details 'f such. The winds kicked'p come mid-afternoon, makin' such e'en more 'npleasant outdoors. E'en layered, those winds cut straight to the bone. By tendin' the critter time, 'twas 25mph sustained, gustin' to 53. Makin' the "feels like" temp 'bout 28f ('ccordin' to google wonders, that'd be -2c fer ya metric folk). I'd many layers, ear muffs, snow britches, 2 pairs 'f gloves, etc. 'd been watchin' the sky to the north, clouds buildin' lookin' 'kin to a mountain range'n the distance. Purty schtuff fer those like myself who thrive'n such wonders. Couldn't resist this beautiful sunset. Not fer certain the planetary lookin' gizmo with what 'ppears to be a heart'd be?? Perhaps a reminder that e'en Mother Nature cares? 've ya e'er witnessed such? Clues's to what this wonder could'a been?

Beautiful! It appears that there was some colder air above what was below so you get to see reflections off the inversion layers! I've seen it before but never that spectacular! Found it! This is what I was trying to explain...

@crazyhorseladycx I can't be sure but it looks to me like a very high reflection of the planet, doubled. Either that or the bright spot is the moon and that is a "halo" caused by the different air temperatures up there. I just bet you were really enjoying watching the sky! I know I would have loved it!

@DaddyEvil search me, 'twas shocked such came out with the camera phone, lol. 'twas jest brilliant to see. dunno if'n that'd be the moon (which 'twas not quite o'erhead) 'r a reflection 'f the settin' sun? i'm thinkin' i might send such to the weather folks either'n albuquerque 'r amarillo. see if'n they can gimme a better 'xplanation. yes sir, ya would'a been frozen, wind blown 'n so mesmerized that neither would'a mattered :)

I'm sorry it was so cold you had to lay up so much to tend the critters. I agree. Best to stay indoors when the winds are that high. As to that picture - Jaw-dropping gorgeous is an understatement.

Wow that is an absolutely amazing photo. Should be in a magazine. It’s going to be about 50° here. It was about 60° yesterday but rained all day and I was inside all day due to making food and my brother in law being here.

I'll try this again. I saw de's idea. Mine was that it may be a different clouds structure going above or below the main one I've seen that before. Whether it would give a great shape I don't know.

'twas a colder air mass shovin' clouds like blowin' leaves 'cross the sky, warmer below so such a mirage 'twas present :)

no worries :) no ma'am, come to find out this'd be what they call a 'sunset mirage'. happens when colder winds go 'cross warmer, lower atmosphere. 'r somethin' like that. i know those clouds were jest a sailin'! got this last eve 'n presume the same cause? 'twas like one'f those sword'n the stone kinda thingies, that shot 'f light shootin' straight 'nto the air.
