Good Luck or Bad Luck?

This morning, I woke up hearing a fluttering noise in my room. I was surprised to see a small bird flying around. It went from my room to the kitchen to the great room. I opened the door so it could go on the porch. I left the porch door open and hope it flew away. There are many superstitions about birds in the house. They can mean good luck or impending death. Have you ever had a wild bird fly into your house? What do you think it meant?

They think you are trying to hurt them when you are really trying to get it outside where it can be with other birds.

Once, my son had bats flying around in the house. The landlord sent someone out to fix the hole in the side of the house.

I am not superstitious, but my grandmother was extremely superstitious. According to her it depends on the color of the bird. If the bird is white you will receive good news and if the bird is black you will receive bad news. I am not sure what will happen if the bird isn't white or black. Like I said I don't believe in those things, but I still remember how terrified my grandmother was when she experienced something that would bring her bad luck according to superstition.

@akalinus Yes, that is possible. She took those things very seriously. I remember an argument between my mother and my grandmother. My mother had invited some relatives and friends and my grandmother insisted on eating in the kitchen because there would be 13 people in the dining room. She found that too dangerous, but my mother wouldn't let her eat in the kitchen.

@Porcospino I am not scared of the number 13 but really frightened by the numbers 2020. Your grandma must have been very superstitious.

These superstitions seem to hang on. I'm sure they were based on something that happened. Maybe you grandma had a bad experience involving a bird during her childhood.

Yes, I have had them in my other house, and in one of my apartments years ago.To me it just meant that it got in the attic and down into the house, in the one case. In the other case it meant the cat caught it, brought it in and released it inside. No superstitions here.

I hope it is gone. It was a pretty bird and I tried to take a photo but it would not stay still for me. I think it was a young bird. It flew fast. I was worried that it would die in my house. I hope it is gone.

@akalinus Yeah, that is the other thing they could die by crashing into something. Hopefully it got out OK.

@crossbones27 It could die if it does not get food and water, too.

At our last house we had a bird get trapped in our attic. We found it after we noticed a bad smell coming from the attic. (I think it meant the bird was stupid and couldn't find the way out after it decided to investigate my attic.) Here, check this out, Jo Ann... There are definitely some weird thinking about birds!

@DaddyEvil You could probably read it online if you were interested or curious. The poet is Samuel Taylor Coleridge-Oct 21, 1772 - Jul 25, 1834. It is his longest and most famous poem.

Did you ever read 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner?" I had to memorize a large portion of it for a class at school. It was not good luck to me. This is a very interesting list. Thank you!

I never had a bird fly into my house but I'm not superstitious so I wouldn't think it meant anything bad.

Yeah, it is just a bird that got into the house. But to some people, it means more.

I don't know any superstitions about birds indoors. I do know they can be hard to get out again.

@JudyEv Well, okay. I never heard it put that way. There are reasons for things that happen. Sometimes, it is hard to know what the reason is.

@akalinus I pray that isn't the case but then, it's bad luck to be superstitious.

I am realistic person, so for me it means nothing. But my grandma used to believe if butterfly comes to our house, that means there will be a guest (I don't know about the bird tho)
