A Very Interesting Keepsake

I never had a chance to meet my husband's father. He has passed for a year when we started going out. But from the old pictures, I can see that my man took after his old man. His father served in the army, and was so handsome. Probably why my husband joined the USMC. My husband showed me the trinkets that he got when his dad passed. He got an old rolex watch which has seen better days, a silver chain necklace, and a silver chain bracelet that has a bar that opens like a locket. Inside that locket is a picture of a young beautiful woman from the old days. I asked my husband who the woman is, and he told me that when he asked his dad about it, his dad never answered. He said he also asked his mom, and his mom does not want to talk about it. My husband is not very close to his family. So he did not pursue asking. I told him what if that woman is your real mother? He told me that is impossible because he was born at home. All he knows is that whoever the woman is, his dad held her dear to his heart to have kept her picture all these years, and even passed it along to him. It is odd that his mom is aware of this picture, and never let it be an issue. They are sure it's not his dad's sister, or aunt or any other female relative. It is one of those secrets that will never be known. His dad took it with to his grave, and his mom will never talk about it.

Maybe someday you will find out who the woman is, or you will. She must be very important if he kept the picture.

She must be. I am also curious why his dad left it to my husband. He's got an older sister and 2 older brothers. Why him?

Probably someone very dear that will never be talk about. My late dad had a picture of an unknown woman as well. We never ask and now we never will. Plus we know he didn't cheat on Mom. They was young too. Probably living a live we don't know about. I'll leave it at that.

You're probably right. I am hoping that there is some melodramtic story behind this bracelet. It was, after all, during war times. I am a sucker for romantic love stories, stories of hope and love that transcends through time, that sort of thing. But of course we will never force out the story from his mom. At this point it is best left unknown, at least I can freely make up stories about it in my head.

It is, isn't it? And whenever I think that this happened around the time when countries are at war, it makes the background story even more interesting. I of course do not relish the war part, I am more into thinking what kind of relationship did his dad have with the woman, how did it end, how did it start?
