Unrealistic Expectations

If I can say one of the things that really irritates me, that will be people around me having unrealistic and exaggerated expectations of me. It is there at the top of the list.
They feel like they can trust my competence, which is good, don't get me wrong, but the trust is so misplaced. They believe that I will be able to conjur miracles and make things happen right now when they want it. And if you try to logically and calmly tell them how impossible what they are wanting is, they have the gall to insult your capabilities.
Good thing that in the professional world, people are aware of what I can do and what I can bring to the table. So even if they try to find dirt on me about my competence, it does not progress from there.
My favorite way to deal with this is to let them handle it themselves and if they are able to, then I will either step down or will no longer question anything.
The result? I have yet to step down or do anything unreasonable that goes without me questioning it. They soon realize the absurdity and impossibility of their ideas.
I hate that we have to go through all that still. Time is already wasted with them trying to prove themselves right all the time, time wasted that could have spent doing it the appropriate way in the first place.
