Taking A Snake To School (Animal Story 20)

I hope this post will find some readers so that I can fill my coffers. Several members who read my last snake story* mentioned that they couldn’t even look at the photo of the snake. I must confess that I’m not attracted by snakes and would never want to have one at home as a pet but I don’t mind looking at them. But in order not to be responsible for heart attacks among my readers, I've chosen a photo of a fake snake (rhyme!) When my husband and I visited Florida many moons ago, we passed a place where someone kept snakes in cages and exhibited them like it is done in zoos. We bought tickets and looked at them. It must be said that there isn’t much to see as snakes usually do nothing but lie around and doze. The only action may happen during feeding time, but we weren’t there then. Whatever. What I’m telling you today didn‘t happen to me but to my mother. She was a teacher at a trade school for home economics. Her pupils were exclusively girls. It so happened, however, that at the end of her teaching career she taught young men who wanted to become captains or pilots on cargo ships. We lived in a town in the north of Germany which has a special school for them. My mother taught German. She wanted to help her pupils learn to speak freely in front of an audience. She didn’t give them topics but told them to find one themselves which they found interesting. One young man talked about his pet snake. Certainly a topic not many people can talk about. Funnily, many decades later, I had a pupil who chose the same topic for his speech in my English lesson. What he told us wasn’t bad, but he ended without the high point my mother experienced. When her pupil had ended, she asked if he had brought a photo so that one could have an idea what the animal looked like. He grinned and lifted his pullover. The snake was wound round his waist! It obviously liked it there as it hadn’t moved the whole time. It wasn’t a very big snake so that the pullover didn’t bulge - or the young man was on the fatty side and had a bit of a spare tyre so that the extra bulge wasn’t noticeable. I don’t remember what my mother told me. He got a good mark for his performance! ---- P.S. I was looking for a fitting photo but couldn't find a good one. I hope you like the one of the old man in Cuba with his specimen made of straw. === If you're interested in more animal stories, click on the green box above the title. === *See here:
It happened in Swinton, a town within the city of Salford in Greater Manchester, England, on September 14th, that a man entered a bus with a large reptile wound...

I would have screamed and fainted. And beyond that had the kid rusticated for such pranks.

@andriaperry Why? The snake behaved well. If the young man hadn't lifted his pullover, nobody would have noticed it. It was probably asleep all the time.

My daughter had pet snakes. Truth: she also had pet rats. I am a bit squeamish around even pet rats but I tried to be a good Mom and keep my mouth shut- they were white rats not the dark ones you see in pictures of sewers. So..... one day she took one of her pet rats to the local corner store and the clerk saw what was with her. Clerk told her to get out and get out now!

Snakes and rats? Were the rats fodder for the snakes?

@sallypup Oh, yes. Many children have guinea pigs and hamsters as pets.

@MALUSE No. My daughter was raised to like all animals. The snake was small. I believe it ate crickets. The rat was just a pet. Do children in Germany have guinea pigs for pets?

I've already seen a snake and I just don't have the courage to hold it or even look at it for a long time. Such a brave student your mother have. Thank you for sharing this story.

@MALUSE I am afraid of it so I could not look at it for a long time. I have a bad feeling that it will attack any time.

I wouldn't be too keen on holding a snake, either, but why not look at a snake?

I've never seen anyone bring a snake to school for show and tell as we called it in grade school. That's quite the stories of the snakes. I'm sure that young man got a passing mark for his topic and performance. Nice picture of the fake snake.

@vandana7 @kaylachan I don't remember what kind of snake it was and how old it was. It was certainly not a grown up six metre (19,685 feet) long boa constrictor! :-)

@MALUSE I’ve been a few feet from some before I saw them. My fear is that I can’t distinguish between the poisonous ones and harmless ones and we have plenty of poisonous ones here in Mississippi.

I know quite a few people with pet snakes. One friend has a Python called 'Monty' (of course - do you know of 'Monty Python'?) and another has a corn snake called Rupert. Our next-door neighbour used to breed all kinds of reptiles including various snakes as well as tortoises, lizards etc, even some endangered species (with a special licence) - he was quite an expert. Once when I was about 7 or 8 we found a slow-worm in the garden (do you know what these are? According to the internet the German name is Blindschleiche Anyway my mother suggested I take it to school to show the children, so I took it with me in a bucket. It caused much excitement.

I didn't know the English term slow-worm, but I know what a Blindschleiche is. It is a nonpoisonous snake. I've watched all Monty Python sketches. They used to be famous among Anglophiles in Germany some years ago.

@MALUSE A slow-worm is not actually a snake. It looks a lot like one of course, but it is actually a lizard without legs. Here's one we found in our garden a year or so ago

That puts a new spin on session of show and tell, doesn't it? I can imagine some teachers just about fainting if confronted by a snake wound round someone's waist.

One time at a place I used to hang out as a teen they had a snake and a girl brought in a mouse to feed it. It was the most heartbreaking thing to see. I was so upset. how funny the snake stayed there on the boys waist all day. We would have gotten in serious trouble if we had thought to do something like that when I was in school.

When one of my sons was in boy scouts the leader brought his snakes for the boys to see. Those were big fat snakes. The boys were having a good time petting the snakes which just laid there on the floor. I petted them to.

What is it like to pet a snake? I think I prefer petting the soft fur of a cat. Besides, a cat purrs when it likes my petting. What reaction does a snake show? I guess it doesn't react at all.

I think it's the slithering movement that gives people the creeps. There must be reason why the writer(s) of the Genesis chose a snake to seduce Adam and Eve and not, say, a squirrel.
