Rough and ready Christmas wrapping

When my sister-in-law was visiting recently, she bought a second-hand bedside cabinet as a gift for her husband. We brought it home and smuggled it into the shed. Vince and I sanded and varnished it and it came up looking like new. Vince did most of the work of course but I was the brains behind concocting a covering so it would be disguised under the tree. The ‘wrapping’ is a bit rough and ready but it served the purpose and the husband had no idea what was underneath.
I always keep any large pieces of cardboard that might come our way and I always find a use for it. In this case, we cut four pieces of cardboard for the sides and one for the top. The ‘box’ just slipped over the cabinet as we didn’t have a base in it. We had some book-binding tape which we used to hold the pieces together.
I cut out a Christmas tree shape from another piece of cardboard and we held that on the sides and top and spray-painted round it. Then we put the card over the paintwork leaving the tree exposed. This piece was painted a different colour then sprinkled with glitter.
As I said, it was a bit rough and ready but it did the trick and our brother-in-law was very happy with his gift. And we had a lot of fun doing it. Now we’re working on another wooden box as a gift for a friend who is turning 70 soon.

That is something nice and interesting that you have done. The other folks in my household do such decorative things and relish these. However, I can just write and talk about those things.
I can however pitch in with coloring and suggesting things if needed!

People with ideas and colouring skills are useful to have around too.
Often I have the ideas but poor old Vince ends up doing most of the work. He could not fathom how I could possibly make a covering for the cabinet but once we got started it was pretty easy.

I wanted to disguise the cabinet until we were all ready to open our gifts.

That's great, and it served its purpose well! I also used quite a selection of boxes for wrapping gifts this year - for one thing it's easier if you have a soft or odd-shaped gift, and it means the recipient can't easily guess the contents which makes it fun!

@JudyEv Very sneaky! I'm glad he was happy with this gift. It was very thoughtful to do all of this for him.

@VivaLaDani13 They arrived at lunchtime Christmas Day so there would have been no opportunity for the wife to wrap it for her husband. Are you feeling better now and over your horrible cough?

@JudyEv I agree with you. It's fun giving and / or getting things ready for a present even if it's not entirely from you like you said. You still did a very important job getting it ready to give.

@DocAndersen That was pretty clever.
I wonder if I could organise to do that. I'll work on it for next year. It would be really funny to see Vince wrapping his own gift!!
