A movie mystery

Both the girls got a couple of DVDs for Christmas; we don’t usually splash out on brand new ones but pick up a few from charity shops or places like Music Magpie for just a pound or two each. We watched one of them yesterday. It was a film called ‘Pete’s Dragon’ which my partner had picked out for Little One.
A few minutes into the film, I started thinking we had seen it before. But I wasn’t completely sure, maybe it was just the same genre - after all there must be quite a lot of similar stories out there of orphaned children with mysterious magical animal friends. But then we got to a part that I was sure I remembered quite clearly.
I didn’t say anything, because I didn’t want to spoil the novelty. No-one else said anything either, and the girls were completely absorbed in the story.
The film continued, and I couldn’t be sure I remembered the details, but it still seemed familiar and I was sure I knew what the climax was going to be. For a few minutes it seemed there was going to be a different ending and I thought I must be mistaken, but no, it really did pan out as I remembered.
Still no-one remarked on it; all enjoyed the film and it all ended happily.
Afterwards when we went to the kitchen to put the kettle on, I said to my partner that we had seen it before. He had no memory of ever seeing it (usually he has a better memory than me for films). We don’t own a copy of it, and he had investigated before giving it to Little One to make sure that it was suitable and something we hadn’t seen.
The film dates from 2016 so only four years ago, it’s not as if I could have seen it in the dim and distant past BC (before children). We virtually never watch TV so couldn’t have seen it that way even if it was on (and if we do watch something we almost always watch it all together); we don’t subscribe to Netflix either. We haven’t borrowed any DVDs from the library for ages - I think the last film we borrowed was ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ at least two years ago!
If the girls had seen it before I’m sure they would have said, they have good memories for that sort of thing. I didn’t want to ask them about it, but I think they would have commented if they remembered any of it. I’m sure I wouldn’t have watched it on my own - if I had the opportunity to watch anything by myself I would have chosen one of the historical films I have wanted to watch for years - and my partner and I haven’t watched a film together, just the two of us, for many years! I can’t remember watching it (or any film) with any other family, yet I’m sure I remember cuddling children during the scary parts, so what other children would I have cuddled?
Honestly I am mystified. This is going to puzzle me for weeks!

It is a remake of a movie from the 70’s. Perhaps you saw the original.

@Fleura The movie I saw as a child had some animation in it like Mary Popoins, but also actors. I remember enjoying it.

No I definitely never saw the animated version. I did find that when I was reading about it but it seems rather different, and I don't think it features the dramatic truck chase and rescue from a burning bridge (which is the bit I remembered best.)
