I couldn't help myself. I had to use one of my deceptive headlines. Admit it: had I titled this post "The relationship between attachment and language development," you wouldn't have read it I have written about my new friend, a 6-year-old girl whom I encouraged to pick up leaves and pine sprigs, so we could do "nature art" together. She is the girl who said to me, "I don't have a daddy. He took bad medicine and is gone," or something like that. But I haven't spoken much about her little brother, who turned three last weekend. He and I also play, and I have taken to repeating everything he says, whether I understand it or not. I have also encouraged him to test his limits on the play structures at the park. In only a month, his language has blossomed. When I met him, he spoke mostly in one-word utterances. Now that he feels comfortable around me, and attached to me, he is speaking in three word sentences. It is well-documented in the ECE (Early Childhood Education) and developmental psychology literature that language development is a proxy for good attachment between a young child and a parent or other adult. I am honored to be a part of the development of both of these kids. And yeah, I get paid for playing with them.

Well done, it's great that you are able to make such a difference to these young lives. If only more of them had such a great mentor!

Why are more "fancy" psychologists not willing to devote a bit of time (not money--money disappears into the ether) to the most vulnerable among us. Can I admit here that I'm a bit pissed off?

@xander6464 But...dang it...I think I'm mostly "white." I accepted early that I had less value than some others. What's a kid who grew up near the 'hood supposed to do?

@TheHorse What does being mostly "white" have to do with it?

A little bit of money helps. But offering children a life of wonder and joy cannot be valued.

Very true. And, speaking selfishly, it gives MY life "meaning."

Guess what, you're wrong! I would have read a post with that title. Does this mean I should tell my students "relationship first, then science?" Possibly both at the same time, but not science first. Unless they can build relationships with science. Seriously, do you have a reference that's not too abstract? I'm getting increasingly angry with some of the literature, it's all big words and if it's not big words, it's HUGE words ...

@TheHorse You use the same word as both an adjective and a noun? Wow ... Some of my students are quite there ;-) Thanks!

Heh. I'll us "abstract" as a noun. Just read the "Abstract" to this 2011 paper. It validates teachers being secure attachment figures for kids, above and beyond the effect of good parent-child attachments. I'll look for more!

Sounds like the kind of job that really isn't that much of a job but rather a labor of love ... paid or not.

The world needs more of you. I remember good toddler times with my daughter. She was maybe two when she started helping my hubby figure out who had sent us mail- I was gone somewhere. She started speaking late but gads when she did, out came whole sentences. Observing kids and their learning is fascinating.

Yes! I find it fascinating how diverse kids are in terms of early language development. Some follow the text-book pattern, and others don't. The key for us grown-ups is just to respond to their signals, whatever they may be, and to keep talking to and around them.

You brought tears to my eyes. You are so devoted and wonderful to all the children you see. And don't let Vanny say otherwise. There is a direct relationship to early language development and vocabulary to intelligence. You are helping in so many ways.
