They had to be kidding

Over my lifetime I have heard some interesting fashion rules.
Things like "You do not wear white shoes and clothes before Easter or after Labor Day."
What comes to my mind is hearing my mom and my sister discuss my sister's friend, Elsie. Elsie had red hair. Mom and sis would talk about, Oh No, Elsie must not wear pink--or red-- or orange for fear of clashing with her hair. I guess that was fine for the late fifties, and parts of the sixties, then along came psychedelic colors and combos. Hot pink, in prints with orange and red, etc.
I am a red head, by choice. I am in a hot fuschia top this morning. There is no clash at all. Colors are beautiful.
Oh, and according to my mom, women over twenty-five, if they had long hair, should not wear it down, but should put it up in a chignon or bun. Not a pony tail, Heavens!! Oh,and no sleeveless tops for those "old" women.
I would have been in a lot of trouble, I guess.
Whoever was the fashion police had to be seriously kidding.

Anyone who comes over and says something about my white tennis shoes today might find one of those shoes kicking their butt......

I wonder if those rules were supposed to apply to tennis shoes. If I remember, that was the main color they came in for girls. Mom did not let me have any, they were not leather.

I had white snow boots when I was 12. What a fashion rebel!
I also had a white pair in my 30s.

I had white "gogo boots at 12". They were all the trend.

Oh gosh yes I had heard really weird fashion rules from my parents generation. Not wearing yellow after a certain point of the year and not wearing white after a certain part of the year. Craziness.
I remember on Facebook years ago a girl a few years older then me saying no girl should wear yellow. I happen to look good in yellow so a few months later I posted a photo of myself in a yellow tank top and said girls can wear yellow or something like that.
I have red hair and so does my moms he always said red and brown don’t go with red hair. I hate the color red so I don’t wear red clothes but brown I like. Pinks my favorite color by the way. It certainly doesn’t clash with my hair.

I would think brown would be very rich with red hair. I love red. I guess I just do not think of hair as a color, so to speak. I will say that the video of the church service today does look pretty bright and not very conservative (I was worship leader, song leader and they stream it on FaceBook). I also look like my mom and sister.

Did you ever hear the one about only 5 pieces of jewelry, but a pair of earrings only counted as one. However glasses counted as one and a watch counted as one. Seriously short on bling. Probably a rule from some Lady's Magazine.

I can see not wearing red if you have a ruddy complexion or such but I think Elsie had a lovely peaches and cream complexion. Red and pink looked good on her.

Oh, much of this is from over fifty years ago. We are all much more relaxed now, although I do remember the trend where you chose your color "season" and dressed from that palette. Like if you had white or silver hair you were a "winter" and wore blues and greens, etc.

@UriahAnne Lots of people with funny colored hair here. I color my hair, otherwise it would have lots of gray streaks. I use herbs--henna, indigo and amla to color my hair. I may let it go this summer though. I bet tribal dress can be lovely.

My sister and her friend were nine years older than me. I still heard the "No white after Labor Day" but nothing about red hair.
