Baby Giraffe Born at Nashville Zoo

Have been watching a giraffe web cam lately of a pregnant giraffe at the Nashville zoo. It was Nasha's first calf. The baby calf was born yesterday. We were all happy to see this event on the web cam. Was planning to share this good news with you all today. And now I have just read where the baby did not survive. They believe the mom, Nasha, accidentally stepped on the baby. So sad.

I saw a giraffe born at the St. Louis Zoo (in person, not on webcam), and the attendant said that they keep the father separated because he’s usually the “threat” to the baby. I’m so sorry they lost the baby.

@CarolDM I'm so sorry. I think I know how bad I would feel. The article said the baby was doing well but they think the mother stepped on it.

@CarolDM I remember waiting for the arrival of April's calf. It took forever. They kept saying that the birth is imminent and I would hurry to the page and find nothing happening. It finally happened after a few months. There was a big frenzy about it and a contest for the name of the baby boy giraffe. I think Tajiri won and I don't remember what it means.

That is really sad, I'll give you that. I feel for the staff, but sometimes things happen that are out of our control.

@CarolDM Yeah, I know. Animals born in captivity sometimes have lower serval rates than those born in the wild. It's just tragic it happens at all.

That is so cool. My sister just earned a Polar Bear Foot Print at our zoo for all she does. So proud of her.

@CarolDM So it will take another year for a mother giraffe to be impregnated for another baby. Is it possible?
