Mitch McConnell wants Trump gone

He hasn't said it out in public but behind the scenes he is telling Republicans that he wants Trump to be convicted in his upcoming impeachment trial. He wants to rid the Republican party of Trump and his power over it. 17 GOP Senators would need to vote to convict Trump in order for him to be barred from ever holding office again, stripping him of his travel allowance, and removing his Secret Service detail. Now that Trump is out of power and is off of social media I'm sure they are more open to the idea--especially if McConnell is pushing it.
The flip side to this is that there is a faction of GOP Senators that still support Trump. They are threatening McConnell with his leadership position if he votes against Trump. . . which is why McConnell is organizing this secretive campaign to convice Trump. We shall see how it all works out.

But there seem to be just as many who think he did no wrong and brought no shame on the Republican party.

I totally hope he is convicted and further barred from holding public office again.(which requires a second vote) The world has seen enough of Donald Trump.

I think most of us realized that McConnell was riding Trump's coattails to save his own skin. Now he (and other GOPs) have to deal with the people who still support Trump. None of them are going to want to publicly admit to anything.
