Flower garden

Many of us are waiting for spring to arrive so I thought I'd share my previous flower garden with you. For several reasons none of these are currently a part of my garden. Maybe this year I'll be able to begin replacing some of them. The top one and the one on the left are Dusty Miller's. They are used as accent plants but I like their silvery color.. They die out in the winter but can come back the next year with some pruning. The next one on the right is an aster. It's somewhat similar to mum's and they come up year after year usually but oddly enough their location changes within the same bed. The next two are mum's. One bright yellow and the other pink. And lastly is a violet which grows until winter then comes back the next spring and grows until winter again and then dies. Some years back I 'hired' one of my employees to weed my garden while I was sleeping after working the night shift. I had showed him all my beloved flowers but he hadn't any clue after all. He pulled most of my flowers out and left all the weeds. He also pulled out my day lillie's the yellow type and the rusty ones. Those I was able to salvage the rest I lost from his weeding efforts or lack of rain. After talking to a lawncare owner I learned that employees with them never figured it out either. They couldn't tell the difference between annuals and perennials once they were past their prime.

What a shame you lost all these. The Dusty Miller is lovely and reminds me, because of the colour, of one we used to call lambs' ears.

Lambs ears and Dusty Miller's could be the same. Most plants have multiple names.

@JudyEv I've seen those here too and they are different after all. I posted a wiki link in my post too.

@MarshaMusselman Lambs Ears have bigger leaves - like lambs' ears. lol But they're the same colour and a bit furry - again like lambs' ears. I've found a photo of them on Wikimedia. The botanical name is Stachys byzantina.

The one that you call aster is a "delosperma", it is a succulent of the family Aizoaceae. I have plenty in the garden. The pansies grow even in winter here, I have some blooming right now.

@MarshaMusselman I have the pansies and the primroses in bloom right now, I see the leaves of the crocuses, I think that they will soon be there.

@LadyDuck we don't get the early flowers until March unless we have an exceptionally warm Feb.

My pansies would make it through a light snow fall into December usually. Out store hasn't sold then in years for some reason.

The deer here have eaten all of those which I once had. My husband also “weeded” my garden and threw out most of my perennials. Slowly replacing them.

Same here slowly replacing them. I'm trying to get barriers down first to get rid of the actually Weds before planting much that is new.

@DianneN I'm hoping so. It's worked fairly well where we've put it thus far.

So was I. I wasn't happy and went through the craft bags looking for what I could figure out. Once perennials are no longer blooming though it is hard to recognize them.

@just4him annuals are purchased at stores and whether in pots or planted they last three growing season but most die for good then. A few can be dug up and brought inside to hibernate in a cool spot until the next session begins but most die. Perennials come at specific times of the growing season and last maybe six weeks to a few months before losing all blooms but come back year after year. Geraniums and inpatients and others are annuals. Mum's, lilies and others are perennials. Dusty Miller's is a annual in certain climates and a perennial in warmer places.

@MarshaMusselman I don't know flowers except for a couple and don't know what perennials and annuals are. I never had a green thumb. Though I love flowers.

Do they die during winter or just hibernate. They are lovely.

I mostly buy varieties that hibernate. Other people buy varieties that die. Some have both in their gardens.

He was misguided I guess you'd say. He really wanted to help me out and didn't realize he didn't know what he was doing. If there's ever a next time I'll be sure to be with anyone doing my weeding for me. Actually I had someone more recently and he paid better attention to what I told him.

I bet you didn't ask him again! Nice flowers - are you looking forward to spring? I've just been looking at catalogues, planning to send for some dahlias and gladioli.

I'm looking forward to spring before November. I need to get more wedding done before I get busy with planting to many flowers. But I do plan on getting more Dusty Miller's and I'm not sure what else. I miss seeing my mum's when the snow is on the ground and they're easy to take care of overall.

What a nice display of flowers and such. We try to include Dusty Miller in our little garden spots every year. They seem to compliment any color flower.

I buy them to use elsewhere but pretty much just leave them where they grow. They are pretty in pots but I don't do pots every year.
