Exhausted: I Hate Power Outage...

As of this moment, I was so toxic because of the unannounced power outage. My brother keeps on shouting that it is brownout. Despite this, I managed to crack a joke with him. Why do we need to call it 'brownout'? It is better to say 'blackout." I was laughing because he cannot process my point. We can just call it a 'power outage.' Now, I am back teaching online and exhausted. Can you imagine how I need to carry a generator out of the house? Can you still manage to crack a joke despite being stressed out? Which is appropriate, brownout or blackout? Image Credit: media1.giphy.com

Brownout and blackout are different. A blackout is a complete interruption of power. A brownout is a partial, temporary reduction in system voltage. So it depends what you experienced.

I think we experienced a brownout. For the reason that it is the whole city for an hour. Is it?

It's brownout if the power outage is brief and localized. It's blackout if the power outage is long and covers the whole city or province. Yup. Humor somehow provides ease during a difficult situation. So, they say, be done with it.

@Shavkat This day and age, power outages must not be tolerated. The government does impose penalty for late tax payments.

@allknowing I sometimes go to UPS, but it is quite slow to earn here. Any tips? I haven't tried Invertor. Is the platform the same thing?

If the power flickers and then comes right back on it is called a brownout. If the power goes off and stays off for a while it is a blackout. It's very rare for us to lose our power unless there is some extenuating circumstances. The last time I can remember losing power was ten years ago when we had freezing rain. It coated the power lines with so much ice that they pulled loose from our house. It took three weeks before the power company could fix our wires. (The ice coating my car was about five inches (12.7 cm) thick. It took me a week to carefully chip the ice off enough I could open my car door to start the car and let it defrost itself. It was really bad.) Some of my friends who didn't lose power during the storm came and took me to their house for the three weeks.

I can call it brownout then. It laster for an hour. It is not often to have power interruptions here, too. If there is, the electric company will release scheduled power interruptions. It usually happens during the wet season.

@Shavkat If it lasted more than a minute or two, then it was a blackout.

The power outage lasted for an hour. I am feeling so drained in setting up the generator to have classes online.

I think it is a brownout because it took an hour without electricity.

An hour is long enough to be called a blackout. But if it was localised, brownout would be more appropriate.

It is the other way around here. To be safer, it is better to say power interruption.

If power outage happened now, I will be in rage. We can't go out if that happened. If not I could take everyone to the nearest river. Since it's MCO, we'll be stuck in the house, melting. Even the backyard is not cool right now.

I can feel you. It is a big no for me not to have power when teaching online. There is no option to cancel the classes.

How awful! That must be so awful. Nothing like that happens here, although we once or twice had a huge blackout that resulted in entire area to lose power.

Whenever it happens here, I always think that it is better than in lowland areas. It is too hot to bear the weather in these places.

When I was a governess up north, we had 'School of the Air' and we had battery operate radio sets. If the batteries went flat, we had to rush around to find some that would work.

I had experienced this before, especially in lowland areas. Actually, I experienced during my childhood years with my grandparents' hometown. Now, thanks to the 4th Industrial Revolution, life became much easier than in the past.

we have those during the summer often. It is a brownout if it is intentional. but I agree when it isn't intentional blackout is a much better description!

I am not sure why the local people here call it brownout. I guess they used to have a power outage on a large scale in the past before the 4th Industrial Revolution.

@Shavkat so normally a brown out refers to a smaller area than a blackout. In addition to the concept of intentional vs accidental.

It is not an option to cancel the classes. I carried on when my generator works. As expected, I was being complained about by one of my students.
