Are you a pathological liar?

BEFORE you respond... Let me clarify.
I've had a conversation with two different people about two different people today. One is an old friend from high school who I've also lived with in the past and another is an old acquaintance...
The discussion about the friend is more about his compulsion to lie. We can't be sure that he does lie because we aren't as acquainted as we once were.
The other discussion was about someone who... stretches the truth rather imaginatively, shall we say?
ARE YOU a liar?
ARE YOU lying?

Not me. I do feel like I know more of those people who don't lie exactly but do stretch the truth. One friend we had did so much of both just to gain acceptance from new friends (when we were all very long time friends) . . . it got to the point where we think he actually believed his lies . . . we didn't, and it cost him our friendship.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That he did. It's like he was living a high school life in his 30s.

Oh that's kind of sad. It sounds like he had a lot of low self esteem too.

I tend to err in the direction of truth. But I am learning to "lie by omission" when it is called for. I don't want to hurt feelings when it serves no purpose. You are from the United States. You know that we have ah an issue with someone in a position of power who is a pathological liar. Ultimately it will contribute to his downfall. But will others model (imitate) this kind of behavior? Or learn to stay away from it?

I feel like the higher the position the more likely others will conform to this behavior That is a scary thought in my opinion.

Depends upon what you mean as "pathological liar". I think many a pathological liar is a person who is yearning to be included in the group. Inferiority complex? A lot of it can be deduced logically. Some are unhappy with some aspect of their lives. So they take to doing something adventurous. Then cover up begins. LOL. I find that amusing actually. I do lie sometimes. I have clarified in Pony's box. I am telling the truth that I lie. That should carry some weight. LOL

I've known many people who have lied in one way or another in order to be accepted by a group.

@vandana7 Absolutely that. I believe many have done this at one time or another. I know I have when I was a teen.

@ScribbledAdNauseum True indeed. One doesn't have to think much for telling the truth unlike for telling lies. Take care

@CarolDM Yes someone comes to mind for me too. I think I've heard pathological lying classified as a disease before. Like it's a mental response that isn't always voluntary.

I am not a liar and I don’t ike lying at all. When people lye to you you never know if and when they are telling you the truth.

Yeah, lots of trust gets lost when you find out someone is lying or has lied to you

Yep, me too. Though I kind of see her in a new light now because she's very ill. She's had a hard life so I don't necessarily blame her for lying but it is lots of petty lies too.

I have done this before too.
Sometimes it's easier to lie by omission or to tell a little white lie.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Sometimes, there’s no other way than to tell the truth instead of white lies.

I think little white lies are acceptable. Especially if they are given to save a person's feelings.

Would someone that is a pathological liar admit that they were though? Some may, I guess...but not all. I used to lie all the time and thought I could have been one...

I think that there are probably a few pathological liars that will admit they lie, but only because they lie so easily people won't believe them when they say they lie. I hope that makes sense, it seems like a tongue twister in my head.
I believe we have all lied at one point or another and I can say that at one (short) point in my life I thought lying was acceptable. I realized quickly that it wasn't so easy.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It does sound like a tong twister, but I do get what you are saying.
And oh yeah...I am sure everyone has lied....I think in certain situations, and such...it is acceptable. But usually telling the truth is best. I still will lie if I think it is necessary.

I try not to lie more than I possibly have to. I don't like liars. I also don't like people who promise to do things that never happen. To me that is the same as lying.

I'll do my best to speak the truth, but if you live in a totalitarian country,it's very hard to insist the truth and speak it.So sometimes,i will lie to keep myself safe.If i always speak the truth,i will be arrested by the Gestapo of the Red Nazi.
Red Nazi is a regime that built on the violence, fear and lie.there is no human rights or freedom,it's just a cannibal society.the people who always speak and insist the truth never will live long or live better.

I think it's better to be an honest person with no friends than a liar with lots of friends you can not trust.

Very fair point.
