Serendipity strikes again

At the moment, we’re a bit obsessive about this ‘saving ourselves’ should a bushfire come our way. The next project will be to remove the tyres you can see in the photo as, if they caught alight, the shed would probably catch fire too. The caravan and tractor are in the shed not to mention all the controls for the water from the bore. The tyres stabilise the ground but, instead, we’re going to peg old netting over the area to hold the soil in place. It will also keep out the rabbits which have a number of burrows between the tyres. We have some old netting that was previously used as fence guards but which is well past its best. It will be a good use for that. If we take the 80+ tyres to the rubbish tip, we’d have to pay $5 a tyre to get rid of them. So we thought we’d add the tyres to a heap of old reticulation hose down the paddock. The serendipitous part is this: we got two new tyres for the Toyota and Vince took the opportunity to ask if there were other options for disposing of old tyres other than taking them to the tip. The guy had just put down the phone from a farmer who was looking for old tyres. We will ring the farmer on Monday and see if he’d like our tyres. How’s that for good timing?

it would be interesting to know what he will use them for. is he going to pick them up or are you delivering them to him? what will happen to the rabbits?

@JudyEv i knew about rabbits as pests and i knew they were the "wild" type, not the white fluffy pets at home. a relative who now lives in north america confirmed it when he started a garden. yeah, same reaction when you post about burning leaves, right?

That's the funny part. The farmer wants them for soil stabilisation which is what they're being used for now. We would be so pleased to get rid of them, we'd deliver them. I'm sorry about the wild rabbits but they are a terrible pest here. We will be joining with others in a poisoning plan soon. I won't write about it here as I know many find it hard to think of rabbits as anything but cute and cuddly.

@FourWalls @hereandthere No rabbit restaurants. You sometimes see one in the meat section but they are incredibly expensive. Just checked with Vince and it's not a poison, it's a virus. It's mixed in somehow with oats. Because of that, I thought it was a poison. Interestingly, a poison called 1080 is used sometimes and is poisonous to dogs but native animals have a natural immunity to it. It's derived from a plant endemic to the area.

Nice you can get rid of them. I have actually seen little sculptures made out fo tires spray painted wthite. They may have been planters of source. They were pretty cute really.

I've seen swans made in this way and you're right, they're very cute. But they must be the devil to try to cut. The tyre place made a Christmas tree of them one year. I've probably shown it before.

Remove those tires, a big garage took fire last month here just because the many tires stored there. Lucky you, the farmer will come to get your tires, no need to move them yourself.

Once they start to burn, they'd be very hard to put out. And it would be terrible for the electrical wiring to be burnt. We may have to deliver the tyres but that's okay. They are all relatively small. I look on it as good exercise.

I hope you find a good use for the tires, so that they are recycled instead of disposed of as trash/garbage. By the way, where did you get all of those tires?

@JudyEv It's nice to take a look around your property with a different view than what you previously had. I'm sure there are a lot of things that stand out to you now that you may have not noticed before. But good to see it now than when a raging fire is knocking at your back door.

The tyres were here when we came. Just recently, I've seen them as a bit of a fire hazard. When you have close friends/family being evacuated, you take a bit more notice of what's a hazard around your own place.

@moffittjc If those tyres caught alight, we'd never get them out again.

Excellent! I guess there is no recycling for old tires, but it not owning a car, that is something I have not thought about before

They do make things from old tyres now but we'd probably have to take them to the city.

@Ronrybs Can you imagine this lot all ablaze? It would take a month of Sundays to put them out. And if they burn, the wiring to the bore, etc would all go up too.

@JudyEv I recall that when they get water inside they become handy mosquito breeding places. Sounds like a good reason to get rid of them!

I think we'll just be giving them away but that's better than paying to get rid of them although we wouldn't have done that.

Perfect! What will he use them for? I've often seen them used to weight down the cover of a silage clamp. But now many people have moved over to baled 'haylage' instead so they are not used as much.

He wants them for soil stabilisation which is their purpose at the moment! lol I know they recycle them and make matting, etc but that would only be in the big cities. Some stack them to make round yards for training horses and they're used to hold down covers on grain bins and silage here too.

Another huge project for you to do. You two are always so busy. A very fortuitous phone call for sure if you can get rid of the tires.

It shouldn't be too bad. The tyres aren't huge ones. It was such a coincidence that the guy rang up looking for tyres as Vince was about to ask how to get of some.

Serendipity is one of my favorite words (it is by the way an Awesome movie as well). But, that is a good bit of serendipity to have that chain of events happen!

I found it hard to believe anyone would want tyres. That afternoon, we drove out to the trekkers event and the host has dozens of tyres on the wall of his dam.

@DocAndersen Yes, we have the product on some playgrounds too. But being so far from the city, the problem isn't always easily solved. It will be good if this guy wants them.
