Until early this morning, I never heard of Shrove Tuesday, Not mentioned in any of my Religion classes.
And until today, neither did I know that Mardi Gras is in reference to a religious ritual of cleansing. I only knew Mardi Gras as a carnival parade.
Well then, Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. Supposedly a day of cleansing in preparation for the 40 days of Lent. So, all the meat must be eaten today.
Lent begins tomorrow.
If the pandemia didn't happen, the priests wouldn't be as serious as homilists as they are now. Or perhaps the virtual Masses are so clear that I hear every thing the priests say in the sermons.
Whatever! At least I learned something today.

I listen to Fr. Emil of the National Shrine of St. Anthony of Padua in Pila, Laguna. His voice is calming in the early morning.

@Hytton03 The tone of voice matters to me. Fr. Emil speaks in Tagalog and English but his use of the native tongue is quite fascinating.

Mardi Gras was the flamboyant display of carousing crowds on the streets. That's what I grew up with in Olongapo City, adjacent to the US Naval Base. I only heard stories about the Mardi Gras, for children were prevented from joining that particular festivity. Didn't even know it was celebrated on a Tuesday.
Yes, Lent begins today, Ash Wednesday. I still have to burn my blessed palms.

@eileenleyva Carnevale is still celebrated in Italy, a full week and it ends on Fat Tuesday (Martedì Grasso).
My birthday always comes during Lent time, except a few years when Easter comes very late.

I do my best to learn something new each day. This one is simply outrageous. All my life I listened and no one did mention the importance of Shrove Tuesday.
But am glad I learned about it just the same. Almost late in the day.
