A telephone scam that I didn't know was a scam?

I have received several bot calls from a fella with a gentle Southern accent. A few times I have played along long enough to learn that he was asking for donations for some police fund. A worthy cause. But I always hang up before he gets to the "Can I count on you for a donation?" part.
The other day I got a cal from THE SAME GUY, only this time he was asking for money for UCSB (University of California at Santa Barbara), where I went to graduate school. Now I know that when UCSB asks me for money, it's always a live student who calls, feigning interest in my UCSB experience before asking me for money.
Could the smooth Southern accent fella be a part of a scam operation where they pretend to be from this "worthy cause" or that, only to pocket the money? I wouldn't have suspected anything had the same guy not called working for two different "organizations."

Maybe... UCSB put out a bulletin about scam callers last year targeting students and former students. If it were me, pony, I'd think it was and just hang up. Scammers can get information about what school people went to very easily online.

@TheHorse Honestly, I'd rather you bailed instead of playing with them. I'm not saying any of them could trick you but I do worry.

@DaddyEvil I have enough going on right now (two preschool jobs, Guitar Center, writing a book) that I don't want to "mess " with them. But the temptation is there.

Sounds like a scam. My husband falls for it each and every time Embery Riddle tries to pull the same one. He doesn't give them money, but he does "update" our personal info, and I wish he wouldn't. That's how it gets sold to other scam artests.

I wish I knew. I think it's that he wants to see the good in people. He likes to be social, so when offered the opportunity to talk to someone... he will. While he does stop when they start to ask for money, he doesn't realize that giving our information to "update it", is how it gets sold to other scammers. @TheHorse

Same person asking for money for two different causes sounds like a scam to me. Did the guy ask you for personal info?

I would be very suspicious of getting the same man for two different organizations asking for money. My first thought would be you are going to pocket the money yourself. It is hard to know who to donate money to anymore. Too many scams and con artists nowadays.

I think definitely yes. Hang up on this fine, gentle Southerner.

i suspect that is a scam. A quite common one. It is intended to lull you into a mistake.
They are collecting valid phone numbers (they sell them) increasing your delightful waste of time calls.
if they can get to you to the mistake, they will provide you with an opportunity to visit your bank!
