Ah ha! JJ knew it all along, he was just being nice enough to not spoil it for everyone. After all that hoopla about the Eagles yesterday you were wondering. And now you know. Here’s the band that’s gravitated to a higher spot than my favorite 70s band.
#2: R.E.M.
Yep, I went to a post-concert party with these guys in 1989. Very nice guys. A little secret: Michael Stipe is so shy he was over in the corner, away from everyone else. But Peter Buck and Mike Mills were hoots to talk music with.
Anyway, these guys made college rock cooler’n crap. Actually, they made college rock almost commercially acceptable. Not exactly (the B-52s, another Athens-based band, also gained commercial success). And they just made rock and roll FUN.

I had an online friend during the 90s who lived in Athens. She said that she nearly hit Michael Stipe with her car about once a month. He was notorious for just walking across the street without looking first.
