A tornado...

Do you head to your basement or to a shelter if/when a tornado alarm/siren goes off?
A siren went off around 10:30 am here for a tornado.
Pretty and I went outside looking for it but never saw it. We used to watch them from our front porch at the other house but can't see them since we moved.

Usually...
We start in the den so we can watch them, then head to the hallway with blankets and pillows if it gets bad enough.
Live in an L shaped Ranch House so the hallway is the center most.

@DaddyEvil In the past few years, we haven't. They've sort of hit around us.
The last really bad one was in the 90's for my area.
About twelve years ago, when I was still with the ex, we had a tornado touch down not a mile from our house. It destroyed about ten or so houses.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Wow! My city is on a hill on a high plateau. Tornadoes sweep around the city to the north. There's a valley they follow, every time.

They can be quite scary if you're in the wrong place when they go through.

@Laurakemunto You don't have time to be scared when a tornado is near you. All you're thinking about is where can I go to be safe.

Maybe not where you're at but yes, the Philippines do experience tornadoes.

@Lucky15 Notice, I didn't ask which city or island you live in/on.
I hope you never experience one.
BTW, I am cooking a meatloaf. Would you like some when it gets done?

Pretty and I love watching them. There is just something so... powerful about them as they sweep around our city to the north... I'm sure the people actually in the path don't find them as fascinating as we do, though.

@paigea I agree... After tornadoes go around our city, Pretty and I will drive out to see the devastation. Here, we are called looky-lou's for doing that.

@DaddyEvil No, I would hate to have my house destroyed. I have driven by the destruction of a huge forested area and campground.

When I grew up in the States I never lived through a tornado but heard about them. I cannot remember what I did when I heard warnings about them.

If we lived anywhere else, Pretty and I would be more worried about the tornadoes. As it is, they never come within the city limits here.

We were in an earthquake once, my husband was so afraid he wanted to come back to Mississippi. The aftershocks are bad also.

Neither of that.
We do have force gale 90 winds sometimes but that is one very impressive photo you got there.
Stay safe and warm in the shelter if you have to.

It was outside the city and left as quickly as it came.

@DaddyEvil That must be cool when it zips by (well hopefully not being destructive in its path). But are you not afraid that it could come towards you? Or have you seen them enough that you could kinda figure which way it's headed?

They always stay outside of the city. Pretty and I always watched them from the front porch or the house we moved from and can't see them from this house. (Yes, we went outside and looked for it. *sigh* We liked seeing them go past.)

This is “tornado awareness week” in the US, and most places do tornado drills the first week in March. Ours is tomorrow, weather permitting.

@DaddyEvil — been there! I went to the Joplin tornado memorial last year.
I live in Louisville, Kentucky. We have our share of trouble here with tornadoes. In fact, today (March 2) is the anniversary of the Henryville tornado.

Your didn't go hide in the basement? I have a basement but there's not a lot too do down there plus it's chilly. If I knew one was sighted nearby is probably go down there anyway after I prayed.
I drove through One once not realizing that's why it was so windy.

We don't have a basement. And no, usually hiding in a basement, if your house is destroyed, means you may not be rescued for days if you can't get out by yourself. Some people die in their basement because nobody knew they were home when a tornado goes through.

@DaddyEvil I never thought about that before. If the whole house crunches and ends up in the basement that's a lot of rubble to breathe and climb up through.

@MarshaMusselman That's why you're usually told to stand in a doorway that is away from glass windows. You're more likely to be found and there won't be too much rubble to dig through to get you out.

Well I don’t think I’ve ever heard them make a siren noise for a tornado. Every few years we get news of one via a text or something. Only once did it ever scare me enough that I went down in the cellar stairway. I live at the top of a hill so I doubt I’d ever get to effected by a tornado here is why I don’t worry much. But we do have old trees on the property that in strong winds could probably fall on the house. That was what I was thinking when I moved to the cellar stairs.

I hope you let someone know you're going to go down into the cellar before you do that. Just in case the trees do come down on the house, someone will know you were home and can dig you out again.

@shaggin I hope so, too. There have been people here that were trapped in their basements and weren't looked for in their home because everyone thought they were at work when the tornado went through. It was only after several days of the person not showing up that anyone thought to check their home for them.

We think it was a false alarm.
The sky had been dark gray before the alarm but cleared soon after the alarm stopped.

Unfortunately we have no basement or shelter and yet we have had tornadoes close by. I guess if one was coming we would go into the bathroom where there are no windows.

@DaddyEvil Yeah, I have heard that too. However, would we be able to maneuver a mattress into the bathroom before a tornado hits? Mattresses are pretty heavy.

Experts say to climb into the bathtub and pull a mattress over yourself. But with your family, I'd go into the bathroom and get on the floor.
