Our past cannot determine our future

This was a comment from @Laurakemunto on a post by @lazydaizee and it made me think of something else - as MyLot discussions often do - that is only very tenuously related, but interesting nonetheless. A few days ago Little One and I stumbled across this YouTube video by Stephen Axford. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYunPJQWZ1o It contains some fascinating footage of fungi of course, but also I thought it was really interesting that Mr Axford spent his ‘working life’ as a software engineer, knowing next to nothing about the natural world, but later on he just noticed something when out walking, took some photos, and from there one thing led to another until he became an internationally-renowned photographer, film-maker and mycologist, travelling the world and contributing to various media including David Attenborough’s films. You truly never know what turn life may take, but if you are prepared to grasp opportunities and keep learning, it can lead to all sorts of adventures! That is so very true. I find it fascinating that whatever it is that attracts an individual can do so so strongly that it is sometimes life-changing.

@Fleura I've just watched the whole thing and thank you for the encouragement to do so. What a fascinating insight into fungi and isn't it great how someone passionate about their 'passion' can really entertain and inspire their audience.

Sometimes it just happens. I never knew I was good in designing gardens but it happened and that became my business for a few years.

That is very interesting... I thought you were going to tell us you were trying to grow a fairy ring so you could travel the world undetected.

@Fleura It could be fun until you go over a riverbank or into the ocean by accident.

It is surprising how someone can accidentally stumble into a whole new career. If you are at all interested in fungi, I recommend watching the video too!

I like the way that these discussions often lead to something else . You can start a discussion on one subject and end up chatting about something completely different. We do often hear about people turning their hobbies into careers when they originally trained as something unconnected with their new interest. This sometimes happens with people who collect things and sell them on and then go on to make a living out of buying and selling.

It is interesting, the way life twists and turns. I have one friend who started off working for a large food company, then left that and retrained as a vicar in the Church of England, but after a few years of that she changed again and is now a contemporary artist working in glass!

@lazydaizee That is true. Often they get comfortable and if nothing changes, they just keep doing the same thing. It's difficult to leave the situation you are familiar with, unless something happens such as redundancy, illness etc to make you change!

@Fleura She has had a very interesting life . On the other hand, I have known people who stay in the same job with the same firm for the whole of their working life. Maybe they do not get the opportunity to change and do something else.

Makes sense. I cut sharks, earthworms, lizards, cockroaches, frogs, and pigeons, in hope to become doctor someday though I do not really understand why I had to be a murderess of that magnitude to become a doctor. I got their curses, and I ended up in accounts and legal stuff. Life is still not bad. :)

We have a saying "a thousand-mile journey begins with the first step".You would go far ,if you persevere with something and keep learning.

So true it much like you never quite know how many lives your life touches unless the happy occasion arises where someone tells you how you inspired or helped them. Life is an open book and you can change the story any way you want.

Yes our past are not always determinants of our future. Hence its best to focus on our strengths of today but not what made us weak in the past
