Do you shred?

I have a shredder in the den but it's dusty because it's not been used for probably ten or more years. Who wants to take the time? And they're loud, you can't shred while watching your favorite shows. I think I quit shredding once I discovered that my bank has the shred people come by for anyone wanting to drop off bags of material to be shredded. I've no idea when they started that service but the truck would be in the parking lot for half the day. They usually say the bags can be dropped off but I take more. If it's not busy when I go they will often take what I have. I stay and watch the process. I don't think there's room on their trucks for anything but shredded material. Years ago they would dump the bags you brought it in into the large dumpsters and a vacuum would scoop up your papers and shred them right there. I used to have to make sure plastic was separated out. Our prescriptions come in a plastic bag with our info on paper. Now the vacuum thing takes everything, plastic bag and all, so I no longer need to separate any of that. I missed taking anything there last fall. They didn't do it in the spring. I'm thinking of calling the shred people to see whether I can bring it in for a fee so I can get the bags of papers out of my house. And that way if it's nice outside when the back does have the shed trucks there I can still work. Maybe later I'll add some pics right now I'm still in bed.

I do not shred, we throw the paper into a large container, no one can see our papers.

@MarshaMusselman Yes, they bring the large container to a very large shredding unit and later the paper is recycled to make new paper.

@LadyDuck so you just don't do the shredding yourself. It would be nice if there were a bin someplace to dump my bags into but I'll have to wait until the bank does it again.

Does the large container get picked up for shredding later?

@MarshaMusselman Yes, you are right, we must first check which ones are not important to discard.

Hmm, interesting as that seems the concensus here. I have no choice but to shred as I run a business with employees. I can't just throw their info into the trash.

Maybe as the younger generation gets to a certain age they start doing it too. I would imagine you don't have that much that needs shredding, marlina?

We have a shredder but it got stored in the garage when we moved here. We don't have anything that really needs to be shredded.

Maybe some people are shredding fanatics while others don't worry about it. What do you do with old, expired credit cards? Just cut them up?

@MarshaMusselman I don't have any credit cards. I do have a couple of debit cards and yes, when they expire I just cut them into small pieces and throw them in the trash.

Good for you. If you do it that often you never get behind. I'm guessing I quit when I had to take over the full running off the business twelve years ago when my husband first for hurt.

We did have a shredder, we used it twice then it stayed at the back of the shed for years along with other `must haves' that we brought for use in the garden. Now we just put our garden waste in the green recycling bin. To be fair, we did buy the shredder before the local council offered the green waste recycling service.

We have a recycling service here but I would never put important papers in that unless it was already shredded, then maybe.
