Our garbage can disappeared

Hubby took out the garbage on Sunday night. Monday is collection day. On Monday morning I looked out the window to see if the garbage can was outside. I usually bring it in if it's outside. It wasn't. I thought hubby put it in the garage but I didn't go check. When he came home I asked him if he brought the can back inside and he told me he didn't. We double checked to make sure and it wasn't there. We went outside and checked across the street as sometimes our can ends up there when it's windy and it was very windy Sunday. It wasn't there. We walked around the area to see if it ended up somewhere else on the street but it was nowhere to be found. I thought either the garbage men had thrown it out with the trash or someone had taken our garbage can. Either of these scenarios would be weird if true. This morning I went to look around again. I spotted a garbage can laying on the ground behind our neighbors cactus plant. It had the same (brand) name as our other two garbage cans and seemed to look like ours so I took it. I wonder why I didn't notice it yesterday evening. What I found weird was that inside it there were lots of dried leaves, dirt, and some water. Wonder how the heck it got in there. As far as I know it was not raining Sunday into Monday. And the can was not filthy when hubby took it outside Sunday night. Could it be that the garbage can is not ours after all? When he comes home I will show him the can to confirm that it's ours.

People have stolen stranger things. Whether it is your can or not is a real mystery. You will have to upload an update on your findings. Please do post a pic of you investigating with a plaid coat and pipe in your mouth.

You want me to be Sherlock Lena? Or is that Watson that has the pipe?

Our next door neighbors don't seem like the type to steal garbage cans. If this is indeed our can I wonder why they didn't notice it on their property. And if they did, I wonder why they didn't put it out on the street.

@MALUSE Oops. Thanks for the correction. Holmes is indeed the surname.

Are the garbage cans all equal?

@nela13 Nope. They are not the same. No one has a can like ours from what I've seen.

@lovebuglena I mean if your garbage can is equal to the ones your neighbors use.

Someone used your garbage can to collect the leaves in the garden, later they washed a bit and hid there.

@TheHorse If it was not there the day before, someone used it and place it there later.

Turns out that garbage can is not ours. I showed it to hubby and though the (brand) name was the same ours is lighter.

That is an interesting mystery to solve and sounds like someone needed a can to put their garden trash in and then either hid it from you or made it looked like a big wind blew it away,

The good thing is that this can is not ours. I didn't really wanna get in there and clean all the dirt and stuff. The can was pretty nasty.

Does your garbage can not have your house number marked on it? Here in NZ, garbage bins are marked with the house numbers so it would not be interchanged with that of neighbors.

Sounds like a common sense thing to do.

Nope but that is something I am considering doing. Some of our neighbors do that.

We have the city bins for trash. We happen to have an extra black one for regular trash. Normally we only put out 1, but sometimes 2. So once I was looking outside and noticed after the trash guys left, there was only 1 bin there when I knew we put out 2. I didn't realize til later that our neighbor across the street took one of the bins and filled it with his trash . . . he left it on his side until the trash guys picked up over there . . . and then he brought our trash can back . It wasn't cool that he did that without our permission - but it was just that one time.

@lovebuglena He does weird things from time to time - but always temporarily, no harm done.

It was not our can in the end. But I wonder how in the world it got to where I found it. Could the extreme wind have blown it there? Or did someone put it there?

That does seem very odd. When the big wheeled bins were first introduced ours got stolen from on the verge. However, they took it before it had been emptied and it had a leg of pork in it that had gone off. Serve them right. I hope it stunk them out.

It is not ours so we didn't keep it. Ours is lighter. And hubby confirmed it.
