A nod to the 'good old days'

Our younger son lives in Ireland and we’ve been lucky enough to have visited him there several times. Twice now, we’ve been there for the Trim Summer Fair and Vince snapped this photo of a display given of horse-drawn machinery. The machine is a mower. The knives which cut the stalks have been lifted out of the crop here and you can see them on the left of the machine (left in the photo). It was actually a very hot day (for Ireland) and we all got a bit sunburnt. I’ve always loved draught horses and enjoyed watching them re-enacting the olden days.

@wolfgirl569 I think I could just about live like that - until I wanted a hot shower or whatever.

I also enjoy the days when my relatives would visit my late grandparents in the interior of Panama and see the nice farm houses.

@Deepizzaguy I'm sure being on farms or out in the country lowers my blood pressure.

That must have been fun. One time when we at the zoo when my sister was little she got wacked in the head by a Clydesdale. I think she just had her face too close to the fence. She was fairly young...maybe 4 or 5 certainly no more than 7 so I think it made her cry.. She knew the horse wasn't trying to hurt her though.

That's a shame. Normally those big horses are incredibly gentle. Was he harnessed? Perhaps, if he had blinkers on, he couldn't see her.

@MarshaMusselman No, it's just that we go in the summer when these sorts of events are held. Twice now too we've caught the Tattersalls International 3-Day Event which is a very big horse day.

I was in 7th heaven. Then, in France, we went to a place which gave a display and had 20-odd draughts of different breeds. At the end, they paraded them all with each one tied to the tail of the next.

Mostly because of the colour, I think they might be Shires. Shires are usually black with white socks. You don't get so many black Clydesdales. They could even be a cross of some sort.

It's interesting to watch. I love stuff like that. My father was one of the last to use horses on his farm and I always loved harnessing the last one we had into the cart.

We have a gentleman who lives close to my mother in law in our county who still uses his mule to plow the rows in his garden each year. I must say his rows always seem to be the straightest. I love seeing people doing things as they once were, keeps that part of history alive.

We had a good time. They had a competition called 'tossing the sheaf' where men pitched a sheaf of hay over a bar. You can see the sheaf partway up and it went up over the bar.
